Sophie’s Artisan Arts

Hi, I’m Sophie, an artist, illustrator, writer and owner of four very large wolfies living in the wilds of Gloucestershire (UK).

Art has always been the single most prominent part of my life since before I could walk. As a teenager I used to create artworks for family and friends then later created commissions for other people. A Fine Art Degree followed and then an unaccepted MA offer at Slade School (which I still regret saying no to). I fell into teaching for 16 years, nuturing children’s imaginations and hopefully inspiring them to develop their own creativity. But after illness ended my career I found myself turning once more to art, and it has been a real life saver.

Art has the ability not only to lift your spirits and see you through a crisis when all else seems hopeless but it can also inspire others and even heal. Art as therapy (regardless of the ability level of the person creating it) is only now really being recognised by medical practitioners as having vastly positive effects on both physical and mental health. Certainly for me, when chronic pain or severe vertigo has rendered me unable to even walk, I’ve still been able to pick up a pencil or brush and steady my gaze, and after only a few minutes those stresses and pains just seem to lessen. Silk painting in particular is hugely enjoyable and therapeutic, it’s just impossible to be stressed when you’re silk painting!

So, after much nudging and prodding by my lovely friends to actually sell my artwork and create an Etsy shop, I have eventually taken the plunge! https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SophiesArtisanArts
