It's been ages since I posted. I have been busy providing counselling more than shiatsu recently. Unusually, I have some after school/after work counselling space available. I specialise in helping adults and young people move through and recover from anxiety. Check out my website for more details, if you are curious.

Advert Alert! Room Hire...
*We can also rent it out to you if you are working from home and want a relaxing office space to retreat to!

Hello lovely people, A fellow counsellor and I (a shiatsu practitioner and counsellor) have a lovely spacious, quiet therapy room to rent in Redland BRISTOL. The space is situated in a converted rectory, opposite another room used by therapists every day of the week.
The room is a good size for Shiatsu, individual, couples or family therapy. There is plenty of storage space too.
We have provided a dedicated area for online working.
There is a kitchen with a fridge and microwave, two toilets, and full internet access.
The room is currently available from 7am to 10pm Monday through to Sunday.
There may be an option to use the room for workshops over a weekend, using the room opposite as a breakout room.
£35 per half day, £70 for the full day. Ideally, we would like the space to be occupied by just a few renters so we all take ownership of the room. We are open for renting for less hours but not 1 hour at a time.
Please respond if you are interested or do pass on to others if you think they may be interested. Pictures can be sent on request.

Wise words full of insight. Who recognises this...

Sometimes as parents, we get caught up in reprimanding our children.

We alert them to the issue at hand.....and we let them know why they shouldn't have done whatever deed is in question.

Then.....if they don't seem contrite enough....we keep tapping until we hit bone.

I noticed it in myself when my oldest was about six years old. He chose to turn his video game back on after we had specifically told him it was done for the night.

I thought I heard the familiar humming....but in my mind there was no way he was that defiant. I slowly walked downstairs....anger building as my mind recognized what the sound was and put the pieces together.

Yep, I was right.....he deliberately lied to me and did what he wanted to do. I felt anger flood my system. He was such a great kid and rarely disobeyed.....how could he think this was a good idea or that he would get away with it?

I turned off the game (much to his surprise) and he quickly ran back into his bed. I explained why this was not okay....he gave me an apology with tears in his eyes and then....as normal...grabbed his stuffies and curled up to fall asleep.

Except....that wasn't enough for me.

I needed shame. Generational patterns taught me that if he didn't feel shame, he would repeat this behavior.

So I pressed on...tapping for bone. Until finally, he was crying hard and his head hung low. That night he would fall asleep feeling his whole self was wrong instead of just his behavior.

That's the difference you know?

We all have a conscience and when we do something we shouldn't....we have a healthy emotion called guilt. When you feel guilty about the wrong thing you did, you can take steps to make up for it and put it behind you.

When you feel shame it offers no clear cut way to come back to feeling more positive about yourself.

I noticed that need in myself as I walked back upstairs that night. It just wasn't enough until I was convinced he felt "bad enough" that he wouldn't do it again.

It was a need built into me from as early as I can remember. When I was shamed as a child, I had a part of me that began to should me and convince me that I was bad when I made bad choices. Then that part hung over my head for a really long time.

There was no road back to a place I could feel that my mistakes were not the whole of me.

It took years for me to release the shame instilled in my mind and my body.

Shame leads to low self esteem. It leads to feeling rejected by others even when they aren't rejecting you. Shame prevents us from self acceptance.....which means we struggle to accept others as well, creating relational problems.

I know that isn't what you want for your child. I know this with everything in me.

So....we raise our awareness of the difference between guilt and shame.

We notice our behaviors when our child disobeys. What do you feel in your body. What are your thoughts telling you and can you trust them or are they based in old patterns? Remembering that our urges are based in an old neural pathway paved by our caregivers.

We recognize the patterns we may be acting from and creating in our childrens lives.

We work to build new neural pathways for new ways of parenting.

We are a whole new generation of parents and shame is not a tool we will be using to gain compliance.

We just don't need it.
We can do better.
