Sue Ryall - eco-therapist

Sue Ryall - eco-therapist Slow down and deepen your connection with the earth, taste wildness and mystery. Time spent in nature can make us feel better. We are not separate.

Regular groups and individual ecotherapy in beautiful deciduous woods near Stroud, Gloucestershire We often feel more at ease or settled in woods, among trees, listening to birds, being with animals, feeling the wind on our skin, the rain or sun on our face.

By being in nature, with other species we remember that we are inextricably interconnected with the natural world and dependent on it. Yet sometimes we forget this, causing a rift deep in our being. We have a reciprocal relationship with the other-than-human world and attending to this relationship is profoundly healing to ourselves, to other species and to the earth we call our home.

I offer individual and group reflective practices, which help deepen our connection with ourselves, the earth and the mysteries of life. Monthly groups in beautiful deciduous woods on the third Sunday of the month - 10.30 - 13.30
£15 (concessions available)
Individual ecotherapy - email sueryall52@gmail.com for more information
£60 for 1.5 hour session (concessions available)

I am running a Meetings with Nature group on Sunday 7 August, 10.30 - 1.30 in beautiful deciduous woods near Stroud

We'll spend time resting in the woods in its summer glory, breathing in the trees in all their fullness; maybe watching butterflies or young birds, listening out for the call of the buzzards, or woodpeckers. Spending some time in silence and some sharing our experiences.

Let me know if you'd like more details or if you'd like to book.

Meetings with Nature

Writing for Well-being as an aid to deepen our connection with the Natural world and the mystery of life around us.

An invitation to make time for yourself, and to use the process of Writing for Well Being to help you slow down and deepen your connection with yourself, the earth, the streams running through the woods, and the many species living in and around the trees. To taste the wildness around us.
Although writing for well-being is creative it is different from a creative writing class/group. Writing is done in the moment, during the group. Spelling, grammar and literary merit are not important. The point is to get your head out of the way and let your pen write! There is a body of research proving that
a) being in nature and
b) writing of any sort reduces stress levels and improves health so using time in Nature as the prompt for writing might even have a cumulative benign effect.

Marina will provide suggestions of ways into the writing and there will be time for sharing, though no pressure to do so. No experience is necessary, just a favourite pen and notebook and an openness to playing with words.

Join a small group of us (maximum 6) in beautiful woodlands near Box, Gloucestershire.

I am currently running these 3 'Gathering in the Twilight' sessions in the woods. I will probably run them again in 2022.

Meetings with Nature

Gathering in the Twilight

A series of three, monthly sessions during the autumn and winter.
We are living through times of profound change: Covid 19, the climate crisis, the ecological crisis, and the personal crises that accompany these. Some talk of us being in the last gasp of capitalism and the patriarchy with their divisiveness, oppressions and abuses of us all and of the earth herself. I think the majority of us feel wounded by this. We are at the end of an era and we are experiencing the chaos, turmoil and reactivity of such times. Many of us are saying ‘enough’, for example Extinction Rebellion, , Black Lives Matter and many other groups and movements.

There is a powerful feeling that humanity is out of balance and that we need to draw on different values, qualities and ways of being if we are to survive and thrive. How can we find ways to heal ourselves and our communities, and to remember that we are all inextricably connected with the wider Natural World and the Earth, our home? We will be exploring these questions together during these three gatherings.

As the year turns and the nights grow in length we will meet in the woods to do the work of heart-opening in the darkening days of autumn and winter, to feel held by Nature and the many beings who live in the woods, to grieve for our struggling earth and to honour and celebrate the sanctity of ourselves, each other and of all life.

We will call on the Veiled One, an archetype from the Sufi tradition. She reveals herself in the soft light of dawn and dusk. We can reach her by listening to the breeze in the trees and to our own needs, by attuning to our senses and intuition and by gently calling her.
She is the hidden face of our wounds – our shame, fear and anger. Often she has no voice to tell of her plight. At other times she must be silenced lest she say too much.

She visits us in our dreams and yearnings. She leads us to our own unique truths and she beckons us to the deep mystery within us.
Drawing on traditions of Wicca and Sufism, the practices of Joanna Macy, and reaching in to our own knowing and wisdom we will meet in a small group – no more than eight – and walk to a nearby place by the stream. We will warm ourselves around a fire and share our experiences. I will suggest ways of connecting with the other species and beings around us. We will create a ceremonial and safe space to express ourselves, to honour life and to begin to heal.
Sundays 17 October; 21 November; 19 December 2021
2pm – 4.30pm
Sliding scale of £40 - £90 according to your means for the 3 sessions
I will be asking people to commit to all 3 sessions so that we can get to know each other more and feel more able to share our experience with each other.

Sue Ryall: I have always felt the tug from the land, the sky, plants, birds and animals, finding connection by being in woods, fields, watching birds, listening to the wind in the trees... My spiritual path has underpinned my life. I am drawn by mystery. I have had a regular Sufi practice for many years and am part of running ‘Celebration of Life’, a monthly gathering in Stroud for people of all faiths and none. I have been actively involved in ecopsychology over the past 15 years: undertaking trainings in ‘Nature Based Practices’, running groups based on Joanna Macy’s ‘Work that Reconnects’ and others to strengthen people’s connection with the land. I am engaged with XR and in exploring ways we will need to adapt emotionally and psychologically with the changes we are facing. I have been a psychotherapist for over 30 years.

The next group meeting in the woods near Nailsworth is on Saturday morning 17 July - note Saturday instead of Sunday. 10.30 - 1.30.

We'll meet together and take the short walk to our usual meeting place in the heart of the woods. There, with the help of some suggested exercises, we will spend time using our senses, intuition, instincts and imaginations, as well as our minds, to drop into relationship with the plants, trees, birds, insects and the stream, not to mention squirrels and occasionally bats , even in full daylight! We will exchange breath with the trees; we'll light a fire and we'll share our experiences with each other.

The woods are in their summer fullness, offering shade from strong sun and protection from rain.

We are meeting in the woods on Sunday 16 May. We meet as a small group (Rule of 6). We spend time slowing down, noticing what's around us and breathing in the peace and beauty of the place. I suggest various ways to help tune in to ourselves each other and the 'other than human beings'.
As you can imagine the woods are particularly exquisite at the moment. The buds of the beech trees are bursting out, unfurling those heart stopping lime green young leaves.

I am reading ' The Well Gardened Mind' by Sue Stuart- Smith at the moment. She writes about serotonin, which provides a background sense of well being, helps to regulate mood and promotes empathy. It reduces aggression, encourages reflective thinking and makes us less impulsive. She explains that humans are constitutionally vulnerable to serotonin depletion and that ample sunlight, exercise and contact with the soil all help boost serotonin levels. Fascinating stuff!

So if you fancy boosting your serotonin levels alongside others in the beautiful, deciduous woods in Box do join us!

Therapeutic Reflections within Nature
Therapy in person in beautiful woods near Stroud

If you're looking for therapy in these uncertain, challenging times, but don't want to see someone on line this might suit you:

We know that time spent in nature can make us feel better. We often feel more at ease or settled in woods, amongst trees, listening to birds, being with animals, feeling the wind on our skin, the rain or sun on our face

I am offering individual therapeutic sessions in the woods and commons near Nailsworth, Gloucestershire. I find that the land and other-than-human species can hold us and offer mirrors for the processes we are struggling with. The richness of wildlife can provide different ways for us to see aspects of ourselves, gain a different perspective or hear ourselves more clearly. Noticing how trees within close proximity can support each other we may, for example, reflect on how we yearn for connection or support.

When on the land we tend to have more access to our instincts and senses, we may remember we also are animals. This process of coming more into our bodies is deeply healing. The natural world encourages us to use the right side of our brain more – opening doors to our creativity, our intuition and giving our busy, logical brains a rest.

By being in nature, with other species we also remember that we are inextricably interconnected with the natural world and dependent on it. We are not separate. Yet sometimes we forget this, causing a rift deep in our being. We have a reciprocal relationship with the other-than-human world and attending to this relationship is profoundly healing to ourselves, to other species and to the earth we call our home.

I will accompany you on this journey, as you navigate your way through your process, your depths and your heights and find ways to come home to yourself.

Each session is around 1.5 hours long. You might want a one-off session or you may decide to explore this way of working in more depth and have a series of sessions.
Fee: £60. Concessions available, do please ask me if you would like a concessionary place.
