Hazel Brygider Cognitive Behavioural Therapist - nee Ryder

Hazel Brygider Cognitive Behavioural Therapist - nee Ryder BABCP accredited CBT therapist, fully trained in EMDR, specialising in perinatal trauma & loss.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an effective, evidence-based form of psychotherapy that is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Numerous clinical trials have supported it's efficacy in treating a wide range of conditions. I have 10 years experience in using CBT approaches to treat the following problems:

• Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)
• Social anxiety
• H

ealth anxiety
• Panic disorder
• Specific phobias
• Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
• PTSD and trauma
• Depression
• Eating disorders
• Low self-esteem

CBT works by teaching individuals various tools that enable them to tackle the problematic thinking styles and behavioural patterns that have been found to keep certain problems going. For more information about CBT and how it works, go to http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Cognitive-behavioural-therapy/Pages/Introduction.aspx

I completed a Psychology degree at the University of Plymouth in 2003 and worked in a range of caring roles afterwards, supporting people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and mental health problems. I started my career in therapy in 2006, working at the Priory Hospital in Bristol, based on an eating disorder unit, using both CBT and integrative approaches to treat inpatients and outpatients with Anorexia and Bulimia and other co-existing mental health problems. I chose to specialise in CBT and completed a postgraduate diploma in CBT at the University of Wales. I then moved onto the acute unit to gain more experience in treating a range of common mental health conditions with both inpatients and outpatients. Since 2013 I have worked for Positive Step, part of AWP, an NHS IAPT+ service providing high intensity CBT across North Somerset, and have completed a further professional diploma in CBT at the University of Exeter, which is a BABCP accredited course. I am now fully accredited as a CBT therapist with the BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy). For information on the BABCP go here: http://www.babcp.com/Default.aspx

Trauma is the invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds. Dr. Maté gives us a new vision: a trauma-informed society in which parents, teachers, physicians, policy-makers and legal per...

CBT is a collaborative therapy. The client and therapist work together to understand the problem. They set goals for therapy and devise a treatment plan to meet these goals.

So excited to be finally starting my EMDR training this week. Whilst I am passionate about CBT, there has always been a bit missing for me, both personally and as a therapist. Often people intellectually "know" that they are okay now, good enough, safe, no longer needing to react in certain ways, etc., however when certain situations arise, their tricky brains take over, giving rise to strong emotions, sensations, and hard to control patterns of thinking and behaviour. Talking therapies can help to address some of this, but the habitual reactions often still occur, because they are stored in old, isolated unprocessed neural networks, that the newly learnt ways of thinking and behaving cannot access in the moment. EMDR works on the dysfunctionally stored memories to process them fully, thereby allowing the person to think, feel and behave as they wish, instead of being controlled by the effects of old memories. It's a game changer and the more I read on it the more excited I get. EMDR therapy coming soon!!
