Meningitis B Immunisations

As students start sixth form/college or leave home for University this weekend, check to make sure their immunisations are up to date, specifically Meningitis B.

At present, there are 2 confirmed cases of meningitis and a third suspected in Bristol.

Whilst 10% of people carry the bacteria in the back of their throats without any problems, for a small number of people it defeats the body's defences and causes infection that can be life threatening. The bacteria can be passed on by coughing, sneezing and kissing.

Meningitis can strike at any age but high risk groups are babies and young children plus teenagers and young people.

Vaccinations can prevent some forms of meningitis and so ensure you are protected.

SEPSIS AWRENESS:

Please watch and share this essential and very emotional BBC documentary "Why mum died: Britain's Sepsis Crisis" about how the NHS are still failing to recognise Sepsis in patients. Whilst improvements have been made in some hospitals, there is still a long way to go for others. Through raising awareness, we can help to reduce the number of fatalities. It is a time critical condition, caused by an infection, that requires urgent antibiotics. Familiarise yourself with the typical signs and symptoms to make sure you don't lose someone close to you.
