Living well through companionship 💜

Care at home is not just about support with daily tasks, its about fostering meaningful connections and providing emotional support. For many older adults, especially those who may feel isolated or lonely, having a trusted companion can make all the difference.

Why is companionship important for the elderly?

- Boosts overall well being
- Helps maintain hobbies, interests, and social networks
- Reduces loneliness and isolation
- Encourages conversation and day-to-day support
- Offers reassurance for family members
- Builds confidence to stay active

Living Well with Frailty 💜

Frailty doesn’t mean losing your independence – and it certainly doesn’t mean giving up on the things that you love. While it can bring challenges, small and consistent changes can help slow progression, build strength and support overall wellbeing.

Here a few carer-recommended tips to make each day feel a little easier:

• Gentle exercise – look for simple, everyday opportunities to move more and keep active. Whether it is standing while the kettle boils to walking in the garden.
• Good nutrition – add bright vegetables and fresh fruit to boost nutrition and make meals more enjoyable.
• Emotional support – plan at least one social moment each day, whether its sharing a meal with family or having a chat with a neighbour.

At Prestige Nursing & Care, our carers work alongside clients and families every day to help manage frailty in a way that’s bespoke and effective. Find out more about mobility care here: https://www.prestige-nursing.co.uk/conditions-we-care-for/mobility-care/

Today is Race Against Dementia Day — a powerful reminder of why raising awareness and funding matters. Dementia affects millions of people and their families, and understanding the early signs can make a huge difference 💜

What are some common signs of dementia?

🧠 Memory challenges – Short-term memory is often affected first. People living with dementia may have problems retaining new information.
🗣️ Communication difficulties – people with dementia may repeat themselves frequently or lose track of conversations.
💬 Changes in decision making – dementia impacts how the brain processes information and can show as confusion about time and place and can affect decision making.

How is dementia diagnosed?

There is no single test for dementia, so doctors will review a person’s medical history and symptoms and run diagnostic tests to confirm a diagnosis. Some tests include…

- Blood tests
- Mental status exam
- Brain scans

There are many conditions that can mimic the early signs of dementia, so its important to have your health and medical history examined by your GP.

Why not try this January?

A plant-based diet is a powerful way to boost your health and quality of life. Reducing saturated fats and increasing fibre can lower the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, and as we age, making healthy choices becomes even more important!

What are the key benefits of plant-based eating for older adults?

💚 Better heart health – lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and heart disease risk.
⬇️ Reduced diabetes risk – by improving insulin sensitivity
🛡️ Cancer prevention - more antioxidants and fibre help lower the risk of certain cancers.
👍 Weight management – fibre rich foods help you feel full and satisfied
💪 Improved gut health – fibre rich foods support healthy gut microbiome.
💪 Stronger immunity – nutrient rich foods boost immune function
⬇️ Less inflammation – Antioxidants fight age-related chronic inflammation.

Getting older doesn’t mean slowing down, it can be about finding joy in new ways!

Staying active and connected is so important for mental and physical health, and as we age it can be difficult to get out and about. Here are some fun and fulfilling activities older adults can enjoy inside or outside the house:

🎨 Drawing and painting – boosts mood, sharpens the mind and improves motor skills.
🏰 Lego building – great for memory and creativity, especially for those suffering from dementia.
🧁 Baking – reduces stress and anxiety, and who doesn’t love fresh cookies!
📖 Library visits – the library is a great place to join social clubs or participate in reading groups.
💆🏻‍♀️ Spa days – relax and recharge
🧠 Educational talks – keep learning!
🎬 Film nights
🧘 Chair Yoga

Our carers are here to make these moments possible – because staying active is key to living well.

What is your favourite way to stay active?

Stay Safe This Winter! ❄️

As the cold weather sets in, here are some quick tips to keep you warm and safe:

✨ Layer up – Don’t forget gloves, hats & scarves.
✨ Prevent slips – Stick to gritted paths and walk like a penguin, take small steps and walk flat-footed.
✨ Be visible – Wear high-vis if walking in the dark.
✨ Car essentials – Blankets, torches, de-icer, first aid kit & a charged power bank.
✨ Home prep – Stock up on food, check your boiler, and keep emergency supplies handy.
✨ Health matters – Check if you are due for a flu vaccination and practice good hygiene to prevent spreading winter illnesses.
✨ Check the forecast – Avoid going out in extreme weather unless prepared.

Stay safe, stay warm, and look out for each other this winter! 🌨️

Today, on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, let’s celebrate people of all abilities.

What are some challenges people with disabilities face?

- Accessibility challenges – e.g. buildings without ramps, narrow doorways, and inaccessible restrooms.
- Social inclusion challenges – e.g. feeling excluded from community or social activities.
- Discrimination – e.g. limited employment opportunities.

Let’s work together to combat some of these challenges and create a world that is more inclusive and welcoming for everyone 💜

As temperatures drop, let’s take care of ourselves and our loved ones and make sure we are all keeping warm this time of year ❄︎

Here are some tips to keep warm:

🧣 Layer up – coats, hoodies, socks… pile all the layers on. Did you know most body heat escapes from our neck and head? Don’t forget that scarf and hat!

🌡️ Stay warm at home – make sure your boiler has been serviced and use door sweeps to prevent drafts.

🍲 Eat and drink well – soups, stews and teas can be great options to warm you up.

November marks Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

We’ve mentioned symptoms below, but what are some risk factors?

• If you are aged 65 or over
• If you smoke
• If you are overweight
• If you have a family history of pancreatic cancer
• If you have pancreatitis
• If you have diabetes

*Having one or more risk factor does not mean you will definitely get this cancer.

Don’t know where to start to reduce your risk? You can start by quitting smoking if you smoke, maintaining a healthy weight if you’re overweight and limiting your alcohol intake if you drink.

Knowledge = prevention 💜
