I really enjoyed working with runners this Spring. Not only was I providing them with sports massage and seeing noticeable improvements in their race results, but I also provided them with Solution Focused Hypnotherapy.
The descriptive language we use makes such a difference to the way we approach things. We need to tell our brains what we want to do and how we want to feel about it.
If you tell your brain that you are worried about an upcoming event and that you are going to feel stressed about it, then guess what? You're going to worry and feel stressed about it. Even if the event goes perfectly well, you'll feel detrimental physical sensations of stress during and after the event because that's what you pre-rehearsed in your mind, so that's what your mind delivered on the day.
When I worked with the runners, I helped them to create preferred future visualisations of their running events, carefully choosing positive descriptive language and vividly imagining the best case scenarios. You'd be surprised how effective this particular technique is.
So surprised, in fact, that you might like to try it yourself!
I told another massage client about the process and he applied it to the challenges he was facing at work.
