😊 Today's Happiness Tip for World Happiness Day 😊

Looking at other people smiling can also encourage you to smile and help to lift your mood. It isn't restricted to people though. I have a smiley mug at home. In my office I have a magnetic smiley face. I also have a couple of cuddly toys with great smiles. What brings a smile to your face?

It's World Happiness Day on 20th March. This year looks at the impact of social media on happiness.

Does social media bring you happiness?

✍ I post on social media to help people understand more about hypnosis and how it can make their life happier.

πŸ“· I use social media to post a personal photo diary which gives me happiness every time I look at it.

But there is also a lot of hatred and misinformation which sadly becomes amplified because that's what people comment on.

☺ To increase everyone's happiness, scroll past the hatred and attention seekers (even block them if you can) and like and comment on the posts that make your life a little happier and help others be happier by making the pleasant posts make them more visible.

A client last week said that they had put off seeing a therapist because they felt that they should be able to sort things out themself. This is a comment I hear regularly.

But just because you have lived with yourself all your life doesn’t mean you necessarily understand yourself.

πŸ€” Do you know how your brain works?
πŸ€” Do you know why some experiences might affect you?
πŸ€” Did anyone ever teach you how to manage emotions?
πŸ€” Were you ever given any strategies on how to deal with trauma?

If the answer to any of those is "no" then you really shouldn't think badly of yourself for not being able to do it all on your own!

It's a bit like me who knows nothing about cars trying to fix my car when it has broken down. I would get a much better result if I get a good mechanic to do it.

So don't feel you have to find the solution yourself. Speak to someone who does have the knowledge and let them help you sort things out.

It's World Sleep Day so here are some hypnotic ways to help you get to sleep.

😴 If you have a busy mind that won't shut up, EFT is a great way to help your mind calm down so you can drift off to sleep. EFT is also useful if you wake up and find it difficult to get back to sleep.

😴 Another way to help to calm your mind is to listen to my Sleep Well hypnosis track

Both of those options - plus a lot more information is in my Sleep Well webinar

Looking at the top search term for my website I am guessing there is a lot of interest in a new series on Discovery about a teacher who hypnotised some of his pupils. 3 of them later died and the parents thought he was responsible.

Spoiler alert: being hypnotised by a trained hypnotist does not result in death.

If you want more information I wrote about it on my blog 10 years ago when it was big news

If you're already feeling unhappy other people might find it strange that you hurt yourself in response to that feeling. They might not understand that hurt might help because it's the only coping strategy you currently have.

Physical pain triggers an endorphin release which can give relief
It can make invisible emotional pain feel visible and controllable
It might be a form of self-punishment

However, there is an alternative way of releasing endorphins, taking control and reducing unwanted emotions. Find out more in my webinar on 14th March.

February seems to be the month for foods that are often classed as unhealthy or junk. It celebrates carrot cake, pizza, chocolate, gumdrops, chocolate covered peanuts, ice cream, doughnuts and pistachios. That covers half of the foods you will find in my ThinkSnack cupboard.

Eating any of those foods in moderation is unlikely to do you any harm (as long as you don't have any allergies). But if you find you snack too much on any of them then a ThinkSnack might help you to reduce your craving and consumption.

A ThinkSnack is a short recording that allows you to enjoy the experience of eating a food without actually eating it. Studies have shown that if you imagine eating something in the right way your desire for it reduces. I know that sounds counterintuitive because you expect to want something more if you think about it. But if you think about it in an immersive way it can feels as if you have actually eaten and enjoyed it and so that helps you to eat less of the actual food. That's what ThinkSnacks do.

Last week I went to see Poldark's Mind Mysteries show which included stage hypnosis. Some hypnotherapists are disapproving of stage hypnosis as they feel it devalues hypnosis and stops people considering it a useful and effective tool in therapy or medical situations .

I disagree with that opinion. Public performances of hypnosis have historically been the main reason why people are aware of it.

The real problem is people's misunderstanding of what hypnosis actually is. Part of that is down to our lack of knowledge about how the mind works and some of it is as a result of the format of stage shows that have historically presented hypnosis as a power that one person has over another. (Other forms of entertainment have reinforced this idea.)

There is room for hypnosis in therapy and on stage. Some of the well-known authors of hypnotherapy books that I read when I was training were written by people who started off as stage hypnotists.

I learned stage hypnosis because I wanted to be able to demonstrate hypnosis outside a therapy room so people could learn more about it and be more open to using hypnotherapy. I don't perform on stage. I prefer using hypnosis for fun with individuals or small groups where they can see it up close and personal, where it can be more tailored to those specific people and they can ask questions so they can understand more about how it works.

Hypnosis can help people make amazing changes in their lives and help them manage life day to day. It can also be a bit of fun and bring joy.

If you are using hypnotherapy to reduce a fear or phobia, one of the important things to do is to get rid of the fear of getting rid of the fear.

The fear is there to keep you away from something you don't like. If you get rid of it then your mind won't be giving you warning signals and so you will end up doing that thing you don't like. That can be a frightening thought!

But, if you don't get rid of the fear of getting rid of the fear then you won't get rid of the fear!

Getting rid of the fear isn't dangerous because you will be replacing it with caution. Most people will have an inbuilt caution that assesses a situation and then decides if it is safe or not. That decision will be based on a number of factors and is a more graduated scale rather than the blanket yes/no, good/bad that comes from fear. You won't be going from being afraid of a situation to rushing headlong into that situation without thinking about it

Once your mind is comfortable with getting rid of the fear of getting rid of the fear, then you can work on getting rid of actual fear of phobia you originally wanted to address.
