Hypnotherapy is labelled as a talking therapy but sometimes it's the not the speech but the silence that is important.

In a hypnotherapy session I like to get on with things and feel that we are getting somewhere but sometimes it's important to be quiet and wait.

⏳ Wait for a client to process emotion and work through things at their own pace.
⏳ Wait for a client to find their own words to express how they feel
⏳ Wait for a client to feel comfortable enough to address a difficult issue
⏳ Wait for a client to experience the benefit ssion

EFT is known as the tapping technique because it involves tapping on acupressure points whilst you say a phrase that describes how you feel. But I rarely tell my clients to tap on the points and I don't usually ask them to say a phrase.

Instead they
• rub on the points because that is soothing
• simply focus on how they feel because then they don't need to go to the extra effort of putting their feelings into words.

Is that the best way of doing it? Not always.

• Sometimes tapping works better.
• Sometimes people find it is more powerful to say what they feel.
• Sometimes the therapist might be using it in a way that works best with tapping and words.

That might seem confusing but it is also a benefit because it can be used in the best way for each individual. That's why it's useful to do a session with a practitioner, so you can find out what works best for you.

So if you have tried EFT and you didn't find it helpful another variation might be more successful for you.

Last week Gary Craig died but his legacy will live on. Outside the therapy community he is probably unknown but he has had an impact on a lot of lives as he was the creator of Emotional Freedom Techniques, often know as EFT or the tapping technique.

If you aren't aware of it, it's a way to reduce unwanted emotions by tapping or rubbing on acupressure points.

I was so sceptical of it when I first heard about it as it seemed weird and also the reported results seemed to be too good to be true

But when I finally decided it was worth seeing what the fuss was about and giving it a go my mind was changed. Since then I have become a huge fan of it and teach a version of it to nearly all my clients as a self help technique.

So, thanks to Gary and all the people he was inspired by and all the people who he in turn has inspired.

Blushing seems to have been a popular search term on my site recently so I thought I'd do a post about it.

Blushing can become a vicious circle. You feel embarrassed, so you blush, then you feel embarrassed about blushing so you blush even more. The same cycle can also happen purely if you are anxious about blushing because that can lead to the anxious thoughts creating the blush.

I have worked with people who say they only have to think about a situation and they feel their face becoming warmer.

The good news is that in most situations hypnotherapy can help to reduce blushing. For some people it can be a question of increasing confidence so you don't feel as anxious about your interactions with others. For others it can be addressing the automatic response of expecting to blush in certain situations. And it could be a combination of both.

Vogue Williams was in the last series of I'm a Celebrity and said she had seen a hypnotherapist for help in addressing her phobia of cockroaches.

Hypnosis is a good way to address fears and phobias. Her situation was more extreme than the majority of people as usually people start off worried about seeing an insect rather than having them poured over their head as she did.

You can see a list of the range of phobias I have helped with at https://www.sharonstiles.co.uk/blog/phobias-a-to-z.php

I've been a bit cryptic with the picture as I don't want to frighten off anyone who does have a fear of them who might find this post helpful. 😊

As it's Christmas week I thought I would share a few of my favourite Christmas hypnosis stories

✈ A man bought his partner a hypnosis session to overcome her fear of flying so that he could then buy her a holiday in the US for her birthday. She sent me a lovely smiley photo of herself the following year enjoying the holiday.

🐍 A woman bought her sister a hypnosis session to overcome her fear of snakes. At the start of the session she couldn't even bear to hear the word "snake". By the end of the session she was scrolling through pictures of snakes on my computer admiring the patterns on their skin.

🎅 A mother bought her young son a hypnosis session because he wanted to undo the disappointment of his friends telling him Father Christmas didn't exist. He wanted to believe again! After the session he didn't care what his friends thought, for him Father Christmas did exist.

These all happened at Christmas but - hypnosis isn't just for Christmas 😊. It can happen any time of year.

❝ Can you make me stop smoking / lose weight / be more motivated...? ❞

No. I can't make you do those things but I can help you to achieve them.

Because of the way hypnosis is often portrayed it is easy to think that hypnotists can take over your mind and make you do things. That isn't the case though. Instead we help you to think and feel differently by looking at any of the reasons why part of you currently can't or doesn't want to make those changes and then helping you create that more positive future so that you are then more able to control your own thoughts and feelings and make the changes you want.

It does sound corny but hypnosis can be a truly life-changing present.

A session could help someone:
😰 learn how to reduce their anxiety
😴 get better sleep
🚭 change a habit
😱 overcome a phobia

😂 Or of course it could simply be for fun
😊 or relaxation
