Listening to nature sounds is calming and reduces stress and anxiety. You can find those sounds even in the busiest towns and cities. But (unsurprisingly) a recent study by UWE found that traffic noise reduces the impact of those calming benefits.

Having just spent a week in the countryside the traffic sounds really loud now I'm back in the city.

You can improve things though. If you walk or cycle through busy streets see if you can find an alternative route along the quieter side streets. Or take a few minutes to stop in the park.

If you live in an area with a high level of traffic noise you could play some nature sounds from Radio Lento to bring more calm into your home.

Spend some time today thinking about the people who support and encourage you. I am fortunate to have lots of those people in my life. The one I'd like to highlight today is Adrian Chase. He is a thoughtful man who listens and gets to the heart of the matter with well-considered words.

The number of under 18s in the UK who have never smoked but have started va**ng is increasing which is sad considering that va**ng was touted as a way of helping people to stop smoking.

I saw a girl under 16 last year who was addicted to va**ng. She told me she was constantly thinking about when she would next be able to v**e. Fortunately she told her mother and as a result she came to do a hypnotherapy session with me. By the end of the session she said that the urge had gone and she felt completely different. Last time I checked she hadn't v**ed again.

When someone wants to stop- va**ng or smoking - hypnotherapy can often help to make it easier. (Not always in a single session. I usually recommend 2 and some people have more).

❝ I know it's stupid but I still feel anxious about it. ❞

The brain is complicated, but to understand why this dilemma happens so often let's keep it simple.

The conscious "knowing" part of your brain works on logic and analyses what makes sense and what doesn't.

The subconscious "feeling" part of your brain works on emotion and habit and relies on what feels comfortable or uncomfortable and what you usually do. It tries to keep you away from things that feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar.

That feeling part of your brain acts faster than the logical part because it doesn't have to analyse anything, it's designed to act quickly so that you stay out danger.

So that's why you can KNOW something but FEEL the opposite and then act on your feelings. That's why you know why it doesn't make sense to feel anxious but you still do feel that way.

The good news is that hypnosis can help to slow the anxious part of your brain down so the sensible part can catch up.

A very unusual treatment for PTSD is Tetris. Remember (or even know of!) that compelling computer game?

Studies looked at whether playing Tetris could
◼ help prevent flashbacks immediately after a traumatic event
◼ help reduce the effect of trauma flashbacks on someone affected by PTSD

✅ Both studies found it worked.

I always like techniques that people can use themselves so they have more control over their emotions and I have suggested it to some of my clients who have also found it useful.

Today is Let it Go Day.

❝You don't want it and you don't need it so it's OK to let it go❞ are words that can be very powerful in hypnosis sessions.

It's not always easy to let things go though. It might feel like it's impossible, you're not allowed, you can't imagine living without them or you just can't work out how.

If you would like to let something go but are struggling get in touch to find out how I could help.

It's International Panic Day - though I'd prefer it if it was International Don't Panic Day.

If you ever have your own Panic Days watch this video for a quick way to calm down those panicky feelings.

That's just the start. There are other things which could help the panic to be less likely to come in the first place. Visit my website to find out more.

Why might hypnotherapy and EMDR be useful ways to reduce PTSD?

☺ You don't have to talk things through over and over and feel retraumatised
☺ Both techniques focus on the emotion, not on trying to make sense of things
☺ EMDR can help to neutralise the trauma
☺ Hypnosis can help you have more positive feelings
☺ It could take less time than you expect

This week is Carers Week, shining a spotlight on unpaid carers - a group of people that often are in the shadows, working hard to improve someone else's life, something which can often have a big impact on the quality of their own lives.

There are various activities for carers around the country. See them all at https://www.carersweek.org/ways-to-get-involved/activities/?cmp=activity

As part of that I am offering £20 discount on any sessions booked by carers this week (sessions can be taken at a later date).

If you would like to take advantage of this, or know someone who would benefit please get in touch.

The treatment that is most often recommended for PTSD is EMDR. So many letters!

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) uses eye movements to alter the way your brain processes memories so that you recall them differently. Most of the time when you recall a memory the feeling associated with it tends to be reinforced (whether good or bad). But there is also the opportunity to change that feeling. EMDR uses this opportunity to reduce unwanted emotions so that the memory loses its negative impact on you.
