Did you know that having a safe, secure place to live is a human right?

At Ara, we believe everyone deserves access to adequate housing and the support they need to rebuild their lives - regardless of their circumstances.

Human rights aren't just words on paper. They're about:

✨ Access to support in your own language
✨ Being treated with dignity and respect
✨ Having a chance to start again

This Human Rights Day (10th December), we're reaffirming our commitment to supporting people across Wales and the Southwest of England with housing, recovery, and getting back on their feet.

Creating accessible support for everyone πŸ’™

Last Wednesday, our team delivered Bet You Can Help Level 2 training to 32 staff members from EYST (Ethnic Youth Support Team) across Swansea, Carmarthen and Powys.

This workshop marks an exciting new partnership with EYST as part of our Improving Outcomes work - ensuring gambling support services are accessible and culturally relevant for ethnic minority communities across Wales.

Why this collaboration matters:

✨ 32 professionals now equipped to recognise and respond to gambling harm
✨ Services adapted to meet the specific needs of diverse communities
✨ Breaking down barriers that prevent people from accessing support

The conversations during the session provided unique insights into how gambling impacts ethnic minority communities - perspectives that are vital in shaping truly inclusive services.

A huge thank you to everyone at EYST for your engagement and commitment. We're looking forward to working together throughout 2025 to make a real difference.

"If you don't see someone who looks like you, then you might feel this place isn't for me."

We came across this powerful BBC article today about Navraj Singh and Corrina, who've both spoken openly about the barriers they faced accessing alcohol addiction support.

Their stories highlight something we're passionate about at Ara - that everyone, regardless of their background, should feel welcome and represented in recovery services.

Key takeaways from their experiences:

πŸ’™ Cultural stigma can prevent people from seeking help
πŸ’™ Lack of representation in recovery spaces matters
πŸ’™ Support needs to be accessible and feel relevant to all communities

At Ara, we're committed to creating inclusive services where everyone feels they belong - whether you need support with gambling, housing, or getting back on your feet.
Recovery is for everyone.

"One line is the beginning of the end. One line is the end of my new beginnings."

Our client shares their raw, honest truth about addiction in this powerful poem, "One Line."
What starts as just one line is never just one line. It's walls crumbling. It's defenses falling. It's beginnings ending and endings beginning again.

But here's what else one line can be: One line reaching out. One line asking for help. One line starting recovery.

Read the full poem and let it remind you that your story doesn't end where addiction wants it to. Every person in recovery started with one courageous step forward.

Need support? We're here.
Ara offers compassionate, judgment-free support for anyone struggling with addiction.

We read this article recently on the BBC and it really reflected the journey our clients take.

"When you have a gambling addiction, your circle of friends goes so small. They can walk away, but you can't walk away from yourself."

John Wade's powerful story reminds us why seeking help is so important. After 46 years of gambling addiction that began at just seven years old, John finally reached out to the NHS East Midlands Gambling Harms Service in March 2024.

His message is clear: "If by speaking out and telling my story encourages one person to seek help, it will have been worth it."

John describes how his addiction led to depression, suicidal thoughts, and damaged relationships. But after completing an eight-week course with the NHS service, his life has transformed.

At Ara Recovery for All, we understand that gambling addiction thrives in silence and shame. Recovery is possible when we break that silence and reach out for support.

If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling, we're here to help. Contact our Gambling Harms Treatment service today: https://www.recovery4all.co.uk/gambling-harms-treatment-contact-us/

You don't have to face this alone. πŸ’š

The Princess of Wales, patron of The Forward Trust, has released a powerful statement for Addiction Awareness Week calling for an end to the stigma surrounding addiction.

In her message, Catherine emphasised that addiction is "not a choice or a personal failing, but a complex mental health condition that should be met with empathy and support."

The Princess stated: "Recovery is hard, but with the right treatment it is possible. And this begins with a conversation, a listening ear and showing we care."

At Ara Recovery 4all, we stand with this message. We believe in the power of compassion and open conversations to help break the cycle of addiction. Whether it's alcohol, drugs, or gambling, recovery begins when we reach out with understanding instead of judgement.

If you or someone you know is struggling, know that help is available. Let's bring addiction out of the shadows and into a space of healing and hope. πŸ’š

On Monday 17th November, Ara delivered an impactful Mobilising Local Systems event in Carmarthen focused on 'Tackling Gambling Harms in Wales.'

The event brought together stakeholders from across West Wales to raise awareness of gambling-related harms and explore collaborative approaches to supporting those affected in our communities.

A key focus was our vital work as part of the Armed Forces Gambling Support Network and the delivery of the Battling the Odds programme. Attendees watched 'The Unseen Enemy,' a powerful short film created by the AFGSN that explores the crucial links between gambling harms and the armed forces community.

We were fortunate to hear from expert speakers including Glen Dighton from Swansea University and Katie Reynolds Jones from GamStop, as well as Andy Stoneley from Break Even, who joined us for an insightful Q&A session following the film screening.

Thank you to everyone who attended and engaged in such important conversations. We're excited about the future possibilities as we continue developing relationships and building a stronger support network across the region.

Together, we can make a difference.

On Thursday 13th November, Ara delivered a powerful Mobilising Local Systems event in Pontypridd focused on 'Tackling Gambling Harms in Wales.'

The event brought together key stakeholders from Rhondda, Bridgend and Merthyr to raise awareness of gambling-related harms and explore collaborative approaches to supporting those affected across our communities.

We were privileged to hear from Philip Daniels, Executive Director of Public Health at CTMUHB, alongside inspirational lived experience speakers who courageously shared their journeys into recovery and beyond. Their stories reminded us why this work matters.

We're excited about the future possibilities as we continue developing relationships and building a stronger support network across the region.

🌟 Exciting News! Introducing the Ara Peer Academy 🌟

We're thrilled to announce the launch of our Peer Academy in Bristol – a dedicated training programme that recognises lived experience as a powerful professional asset.

Starting next week, we're creating pathways for people in recovery to become trained Peer Mentors, supporting others while building skills for future employment.

Why it matters:

Research shows that peer support helps people feel more understood, confident, and hopeful in their recovery journey. No one should face recovery alone.

What we're offering:

βœ… 5-week structured training programme
βœ… Accredited qualifications & employment pathways
βœ… Ongoing supervision and wellbeing support
βœ… Real opportunities to make a difference

"I'm extremely proud that we've been able to launch the Ara peer academy and give people with lived experience high quality training and a social purpose." – Ara Senior Leadership

This programme strengthens support for individuals in Ara housing overcoming homelessness and substance use challenges, while creating genuine opportunities for those rebuilding their lives.

Thank you to The Nisbett Trust and St Michael's Foundation for making this possible.
Training goes live next week! πŸ’™

Confidence, courage, and connection

Our Community Engagement team recently took clients on a brilliant watersports adventure at Bristol Harbourside. The group split between kayaking and a scenic boat ride β€” with plenty of fun and laughter.

Kayakers paddled toward the city centre, gaining confidence before joining in a race on the way back β€” cheered on by those aboard the boat, who acted as judges at the finish line! The boat group added to the fun with Halloween props, and even a surprise encounter with a territorial goose πŸ¦’πŸ˜‚.

Despite the chilly weather, everyone showed incredible courage and positivity, stepping out of their comfort zones to connect, support each other, and enjoy the moment.

πŸ’¬ β€œWhat a difference a day makes.”
πŸ’¬ β€œThank you very much for organising today β€” it was great fun! πŸ€©β€
