Anne-Marie O'Donnell Nutrition Nutritionist and Colonic Hydrotherapist

My journey with healing and Nutrition started over ten years ago.

I have always had a fascination with the human body and health. This fascination led me to my own experimentation of treating skin and digestive problems that I was myself experiencing. This brought me down many paths and ultimately led me to studying a Bsc in Health Sciences, and more recently completing my training as a Nutriti

onal Therapist at the College of Naturopathic Medicine Bristol. I have also studied Colonic Hydrotherapy at the Naturopathic School of Colonic Hydrotherapy in London.

I am continually amazed and humbled by the phenomenal healing potential of nature, and food in particular when used to maximise the natural healing potential of the body.

Whenever colon hydrotherapy gets mentioned, more often than not, it elicits a reaction akin to the way we feel about Marmite – love it or hate it!

Constipation is having bowel movements that occur less frequently than food intake, less than twice to three normal movements a day, every day. One bowel movement a day and incomplete elimination is a sign of constipation. Constipation slows down transit time. The slower transit increases fermentation and putrefaction of undigested food by bacteria and yeast. The bacteria and yeast give off toxic wastes in the form of acids and gasses. These substances also cause inflammation and damage the cells of the intestinal walls. These toxins enter the blood stream through the intestinal wall causing many ailments from headaches to autoimmune disorders.

** Bloating
** Stomach cramps
** Embarrassing smelly wind
** Interrupted sleep
** Anxiety
** Headaches
** Skin problems
** Weight gain
** Feeling sick and dizzy
** Increased risk of urinary tract infections
** Painful sexual in*******se

Over the years, have you tried different medications from
your GP, had a barrage of tests at the hospital, to be told
that you have a ‘lazy’ bowel and you are just going to
have to ‘learn to live with it’?

Well I'm telling you that you don't have to learn to live with constipation. There are many things you can do to resolve it, including a few simple dietary changes you can make that will help stop constipation ruling your life:

• Use apple cider vinegar (Bragg's as it contains the 'mother') to increase digestion; start your day with 1 tsp in some warm water. You can also add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice

• Water - make sure you keep hydrated and flush
your system out by drinking plenty of filtered
water

• Drink herbal teas that contain herbs and spices
to help gently stimulate the bowel - liquorice root,
ginger root. Try my Tummy Tea pyramids available from the Just For Tummies website

• Eat more anti-inflammatory foods/herbs: Oily fish, walnuts, flax seeds, chia seeds, turmeric, ginger

• Ensure you're eating plenty of vegetables: include green leafy vegetables (kale, spinach, peas, green beans etc) in your diet as they contain magnesium. A deficiency
in magnesium can slow down transit time in the
bowel. Government guidelines state 5 portions of vegetables
and 2 portions of fruits daily, but try and aim for 7
portions of vegetables and 2 portions of fruit. Figs
and bananas are also high in magnesium

• Fermented foods: kimchi, kombucha, sauerkraut
and kefir as they contain beneficial bacteria (if
you tolerate them; some people react to these if
they have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)

• Lemon - add fresh lemon to warm water first thing in the morning to stimulate the liver

• Flax seeds (a natural bulking laxative) - add milled flaxseed to your breakfast - aim for 2 tbsp per day

Consider having professional colon hydrotherapy treatment. This safe, gentle treatment can relieve the discomfort of constipation almost immediately.

I hope the above tips help but, if you would like to ask me anything about constipation or you want to share any constipation stories, please comment.

I would love to hear from you especially if you've managed to resolve your constipation and what worked for you.

'Many of us were taught that eating dietary fat makes us fat and leads to heart disease. This assumption has been catastrophic for our health. In fact, fats are essential for optimal health, and saturated fat, specifically, is not the boogeyman we once thought. We know now that there is no monolithic saturated fat. There are many saturated fats, each with its own effects. The saturated fat in coconut, for instance is different from the saturated fat in butter.

In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman talks with neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter about how saturated fat came to get such a bad rap. They dive into many of the ways the right saturated fats are beneficial to your health and discuss why, what Dr. Hyman calls “sweet fat,” is so harmful.

Curcumin is simultaneously a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective agent, hormonal and neurochemical modulator, and as a food, it is one that interacts with our genome in a modulatory fashion rather than the more hijacking nature of a pharmaceutical.

Curcumin is simultaneously a potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective agent, hormonal and neurochemical modulator.
