The keto diet is made up of mostly fats, moderate protein, and a small amount of carbs. Eating a lot of fat and very few carbs puts you in ketosis, a metabolic state where your body burns fat instead of carbs for fuel. The keto diet is short for "ketogenic diet." It is a high-fat diet that has the potential to turn your body into a fat-burning machine.

The keto diet changes the way your body converts food into energy. Normally, your body turns carbohydrates (think bread and pasta) into glucose for energy. Eating a lot of fat and very few carbs puts you in ketosis, a metabolic state where your body burns fat instead of carbs for fuel. In ketosis, your body uses ketones for energy instead of glucose.

Other ways to run on ketones include intermittent fasting, and using up your glucose reserves by exercising.

You may have heard the keto diet associated with fast weight loss. When you are in ketosis, your body turns fat from your diet and your internal fat stores into ketones. And unlike glucose, ketones cannot be stored as fat because they are not digested the same way.

KETO DIET BENEFITS:

Burns body fat: When you are on keto, your body uses stored body fat and fat from your diet for energy. This is one of the ways the keto diet helps people stay at a healthy weight.
Reduces appetite: Ketones suppress ghrelin — your hunger hormone — and increase cholecystokinin (CCK), which makes you feel full. Reduced appetite means it’s easier to go for longer periods without eating, which encourages your body to dip into its fat stores for energy.
Reduces inflammation: Inflammation is your body’s natural response to an invader it deems harmful. Too much inflammation is bad news because it increases your risk of health problems. A keto diet can reduce inflammation in the body by switching off inflammatory pathways and producing fewer free radicals compared to glucose.
Fuels your brain: Ketones are so powerful that they can provide a good portion of your brain’s energy needs, which is way more efficient than the energy you get from glucose. Did you know your brain is made up of more than 60% fat? That means it needs a lot of fat to keep the working effectively. The quality fats you eat on a ketogenic diet do more than feed your day-to-day activities — they also feed your brain.
Increases energy: When your brain uses ketones for fuel, you do not experience the same energy slumps as you do when you are eating a lot of carbs. When your metabolism is in fat-burning mode, your body may tap into its readily available fat stores for energy. That means no more energy crashes or brain fog. Ketosis also helps the brain create more mitochondria, the power generators in your cells. More energy in your cells means more energy to get stuff done.
Curbs cravings: Fat is a satiating macronutrient. You eat healthier fats on keto, so you feel fuller, longer. Fat is a necessary and vital macronutrient!!

More information next time on a cheaper, quicker and highly effective method to increase clarity, reduce hunger and lose weight in the process just by modifying your morning cup of coffee. It’s brilliant, effective and easy to do.

How can you help your immune system and reduce your risk?

I hope to provide you with useful resources and thinking to help reduce your risk of Covid-19 affecting you and your family. As the research evidence grows there are going to be updates and changes to government advice. My aim is help inform you with sensible resources, so you are empowered to take action to improve your health and reduce your risk of the consequences of this pandemic.

There are factors over which we have NO control which include and are not limited to:

Age
S*x
High risk conditions such as heart disease
Ethnicity
Being in a shielding category due to immunity suppression i.e. being a transplant recipient
Working in high risk environments such as Care Homes (currently)

Factors over which YOU HAVE control and can change with lifestyle:

FACTOR 1 YOUR BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS:

Control your blood sugar and reduce or reverse your risk of type 2 diabetes (reducing your risk of other inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease) ACTION: Get an HbA1c test to determine your levels. https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/managing-your-diabetes/hba1c
Depending on the result consider weight reduction by adopting a Mediterranean diet. There are many resources on this I recommend. I prefer Michael Mosley’s work as he is very evidence based and communicates the advice well. ACTION: Read one of his many books on the subject. The Fast 800 is a great example and explains how to reduce visceral fat quickly, an added warning it takes self-discipline to succeed. Your WHY needs to be big enough to take on dietary change. His website is helpful. http://www.michaelmosley.co.uk/books.html

For me factor 1 is a biggie for all of us who want to be as healthy as possible, and you can change it at any age. It does take self-discipline and consistency, and the results are worth it.
