April and is World Autism Awareness Day and April is Autism Acceptance Month !

It is important that autistic individuals, along with their families and support networks, have access to personalised information, guidance, and support to navigate challenges that may be unique to them.

They should be empowered to explore their passions,
develop their strengths, and build meaningful connections to lead fulfilling lives.

Together, we can create a society that works for autistic people.

Talk is dedicated to adopting a neurodiversity-affirming approach to therapy. This strengths and rights-based approach confirms a person’s strengths and abilities and validates both neurotypical and neurodivergent identities.

At Talk SLT, we ensure:

Emphasis is on interests, strengths, differences, and needs

Support is child-led and focused on affirming neurodivergent ways of being

A child is not expected to mask or change who they are to fit in

We harness the strengths and talents of neurodivergent individuals and build confidence and self-esteem

All children and young people are given the opportunity to flourish

World Down Syndrome Day 2025's theme is support. Everyone needs different support, including people with Down Syndrome. The right support at the right time gives people with Down Syndrome opportunities to live fulfilling lives with choice, control, and dignity.  Families also need support, to care for and advocate for their loved ones.

Why not show your support by wearing your brightest, most colourful or mismatched socks on Friday 21st March and get your friends, families and colleagues talking !

Being asked why you’re wearing is the perfect opportunity to explain: ‘I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down’s Syndrome.

Happy World Book Day!

World Book Day’s aim is “to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own”

Some of our favourite books don't have any words!  Different ways that we use wordless picture books in sessions are to: comment on what you can see, talk about what's happening, make up a story, talk about a character's emotions or guess what people might be saying.
Wordless picture books are a great opportunity to use visuals such as these symbol core boards to model words and phrases.

We hope you enjoy a book today.

🎄 Christmas is an exciting time. We all celebrate in different ways and with various traditions that may be unique to our families. There is no one way for how Christmas should look. Some of our children and young people may need some things to be a bit different - and that’s ok!

●      Make a list of what Christmas might hold for your family - groups of people, music, lights, surprises, food etc. Is there anything you can do to prepare for these? Some people find visual aids helpful e.g. photos to show where you are going, schedules to make it clear when things will happen, and calendars to give an overview of the whole festive period.

●      Speak to school - what changes in routine are planned? Look out for concerts, parties, Santa visiting classrooms or non-uniform days that may need extra support.

●      Create a safe space - is there a room that can be the same as it usually is, and decoration-free?

●      Will there be expected (or unexpected) visitors? If possible, share pictures of visitors in advance . Think about the best place to meet your visitors, whether that is inside or outside your home.

●      People enjoy gifts differently. You could discuss not wrapping presents, spreading them over a few days or telling them in advance what they will be (e.g. I have bought you a book) It is often helpful to explain to family and friends that your child’s reaction to a present may not be what they expect.

●      Let your child or young person help choose lights, decorations, music, or food to help them feel comfortable with the changes. You might want to consider flashing versus constant lights, use of ear defenders, or making food menus.

●      Do what works for your family, make your own traditions rather than trying to recreate what others do.

Some of the children we work with have been working on identifying categories. They had to go around the therapy room finding toys to fit into each one. We had lots of fun!

You can adapt to special interests eg superheroes, villains and princesses, or simplify to just food or drink.

To step up you could explore further within a category eg: fruit, vegetables, fast food, sweets etc  using pictures online or printed out like the ones on the last picture.

It is World Nursery Rhyme week this week!

Nursery rhymes play an important role in early childhood development and education.
As well as being fun they are excellent teaching tools.

Nursery rhymes and children’s songs boost vocabulary and language development and help children to develop literacy skills. Additionally, they provide a fun way to support early numeracy skills and can also help children to develop social, physical and emotional skills, building confidence and preparing children for reading and writing as they get older.
Shannon, one of our SALT team, enjoys playing rhyming intervention games to develop a child’s phonological awareness skills, such as the rhyming pairs fishing game.

We created an activity trolly!

The aim of our session was to explore sensory creative activity whilst focusing on autumn colours.
🍁
We collected leaves from the playground and encouraged the children to create a picture using the leaves, paint, pumpkin cutouts, and other craft items.
🎃
We modelled lots of  vocabulary too eg “autumn" "warm," "Halloween," "pumpkin," “leaves”.

🎃🍂🍁🎃🍂🍁🎃🍂🍁🎃🍂

Happy Halloween!
