Christmas looks different for everyone, and that is OK.  If you want some top tips for planning your Christmas, keep reading.

Think about what Christmas involves for your family. Who will you see, what decorations will be up, what food will be served, what surprises will happen?

Consider how you can help prepare your child or young person for these. Visuals are often helpful, for example, a visual daily timetable to show what will happen when, or a calendar to show what will happen on each day of the holidays.

Speak to your child’s school/setting to see what changes in routine are to be expected (e.g., non-school uniform days, Christmas plays, school trips). Talk about these changes with your child, and talk to their school to see how you can support with these changes.

Create a safe space. Christmas can often be overwhelming, so having a calm and quiet room that stays the same as usual, can be really helpful. It might be a good place to keep special items or toys, where guests won’t go.

If your celebrations include gifts, then setting some expectations around this can be helpful. Will they be wrapped or unwrapped? Will they be given over a few days? Will telling your child what their gift is be more enjoyable for them? (e.g., you will have a Spiderman book for Christmas). It can also be helpful to explain to friends and family that your child’s reaction to presents may not be what they expect - and that is okay!

Involve your child in some decision-making. They could help choose decorations, music, and food to help them feel more comfortable with the changes to their normal routine and environment. You might want to consider constant lights (rather than flashing), use of ear defenders, and a visual food menu to support these changes.

Most importantly, do what works for your family.  Make your own traditions and enjoy Christmas in a way that works for you.

It's National Nursery Rhyme week!

Nursery rhymes play an important role in early childhood development.
As well as being fun moments to share, they can boost vocabulary and language development and help children to develop early literacy and numeracy skills.

Whether one to one or in a group, nursery rhymes can also help develop social, physical, and emotional skills.

One of our therapy assistants has been working with a group of children at a local SEN school and has created a resource sharing key nursery rhyme Makaton with the team. Becky has sourced videos and lyrics so we can all refresh our memories and sign as we sing.

For more great ideas of nursery rhymes to share, look at  https://www.worldnurseryrhymeweek.com  and check ,  and of course www.cbeebies/somethingspecial.

Collaboration is one of our core values here at Talk.

We believe that working jointly with our clients, their families, and other involved professionals, helps us to identify the areas that matter most to the individuals we support, which leads to the best possible outcomes for them.
By embracing a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to care with other healthcare professionals, educators, and specialists, we can provide comprehensive, holistic support.

Sharing knowledge, experiences, and feedback means we learn from each other and continuously refine our practices. This approach ensures that all aspects of our clients’ strengths, preferences, and support needs are addressed, and through collaborative efforts, we build stronger relationships and enhance our capabilities, too.

Who do you collaborate with in your role or outside of your organisation?

“1 in 14 people have a hidden condition called DLD.” But what is DLD ?

DLD stands for Developmental Language Disorder and refers to significant difficulties using and/or understanding language.
A young child with DLD might not meet language milestones.
A school student with DLD may find learning vocabulary and using complex sentences difficult.
An adult with DLD might have difficulty comprehending directions and sharing his/her views.

With the right support, people with DLD can thrive. Learn more about DLD at RADLD.ORG

DID YOU KNOW? The DLD Factsheet is available in over 38 languages on the DLD website at radld.org

This year Bristol City Hall is lighting up in yellow and purple to raise awareness of DLD on Friday 17th October.

April and is World Autism Awareness Day and April is Autism Acceptance Month !

It is important that autistic individuals, along with their families and support networks, have access to personalised information, guidance, and support to navigate challenges that may be unique to them.

They should be empowered to explore their passions,
develop their strengths, and build meaningful connections to lead fulfilling lives.

Together, we can create a society that works for autistic people.
