Birth Trauma Resolution Bristol

Birth Trauma Resolution Bristol Gemma is practicing midwife and a mum offering Birth Trauma Resolution therapy in Bristol - the only RCM accredited approach to treat birth or related trauma.

this method is safe, effective and fast acting. I'm Gemma, a mum and practicing midwife with 16 years experience. I practice Birth Trauma Resolution therapy in Bristol - the only RCM accredited approach to treat birth or related trauma. BTR combines effective, safe and fast acting methods to aid and support you in processing, healing and moving forward following trauma and PTSD. I am able to treat

not only Mothers but also their partners, birth partners and also birth professionals. Birth trauma can cause debilitating symptoms and these sadly are too often left untreated or misdiagnosed as postnatal depression resulting in treatment that is not correct or helpful. The type of birth or experience you have that results in trauma can vary hugely, sometimes it can be the result of pregnancy loss at any stage, events during birth, in the postnatal period, or at any time. it can be caused by a physical event or even by the way you were spoken to. If it feels like trauma for you, then it is. As a BTR practitioner I have completed a rigorous training process and continue with regular supervision to ensure up to date and safe practice at all times.

ALL IN YOUR HEAD
*
Trauma is most definitely NOT 'all in your head'. As those who are dealing with it might be aware, trauma and the anxiety it leads to manifests in many physical ways.
The amygdala, where trauma memories are stored, triggers you fight or flight response in reaction to perceived danger - it does this before your thinking brain acts, so can appear to be 'out of the blue', you are feeling your heart racing, your palms sweating, tingling in feet and hands, rapid breathing, tight chest, shaking, a feeling of extreme fear takes over as often the sufferer concludes there is a physical medical reason for these symptoms, leading to more fear and so the cycle can continue.
I can help you understand what you're experiencing and support you to process your trauma.

RELATIONSHIPS
*
Trauma can have impact your relationships.
Not only have you gone through the hugely transformative life change of carrying a child and becoming a parent but now trauma has affected the way you feel and behave. You may feel fearful for yours and your babies safety, finding it hard to trust anyone else care for the child, you may view your body differently, perhaps finding intimate touch triggering.
Trauma activates the primitive brain, you are on high alert, unable to rationalise what is a real or perceived threat.
*
With support you can process this Trauma so your brain is able to apply rational thought and logic. You can begin to relax and feel safe again, making way for important and intimate relationships to build and grow again.

Feel free to DM or email if you would like more information or to book a treatment.

YOUR STORY
*
Thinking and talking about your traumatic experience will often trigger PTSD symptoms.
*
In BTR you can choose how much, if anything you talk about. Some people find talking through in some detail cathartic and validating, others prefer to say very little about what happened. Either approach is fine and effective.

FAILURE AND HUMILIATION
*
To often felt following a traumatic birth experience and often this debilitating feelings come together.
*
Feeling your body failed to carry/ birth,/feed/nurture/heal in the way you had hoped and expected.
Humiliated that you prepared for an experience different from the one that played out. That you dared to believe it could be positive.
*
These feelings are intrusive and distinctive and certainly not warranted. Through BTR I can support you to welcome self-love, compassion and understanding.

HAPPY PLACE

Where's yours?
This is a photo of one of mine on THE perfect kind of winter morning - blue sky, bright rising sun, frost on each blade of grass that crunches under foot, the sounds of birds and the river, the exhilarating sting of a dip in the ice cold water before snuggly layers, hot tea and a beautiful feeling of fulfilment and calm πŸ™Œ

THOUGHTS
*
Through BTR treatment, as well as processing trauma we spend time looking at your strengths, goals and what you would like to welcome more of into your life.
*
More often than not, when I ask someone what they think their life would be like if the trauma were gone, they tell me all the things that there would be less of, for example,
"I wouldn't feel so angry/irritated/frightened..."
*
It's really helpful to reframe your thoughts and how you speak to yourself. To build a positive template for the brain we need to give it positive messages, so we might instead say, "I'd feel accepting/calm/safe...". Once we've found the goals to work towards we use these to help you leave the treatment feeling a positive anticipation for now and the future.

SHAME
*
So often clients tell me they carry feelings of shame following birth trauma. Sometimes this is connected to a situation where they describe themselves as 'foolish' or 'naive' for preparing and planning for a positive birth experience only for the reality to be something very different. Sadly this is often impacted by how caregivers communicate, at times appearing to mock or belittle the families wishes.
*
Through BTR you are helped to turn release these feelings of shame and welcome feelings of self love, kindness and acknowledgment.

OVERWHELM
*
Following a traumatic experience your brain spends a lot of time on high alert, our sympathetic nervous system in over drive. It's exhausting both mentally and physically and can result in becoming overwhelmed easily.
*
You may find yourself feeling unable to cope with life's daily demands and wanting to lie down with your fingers in your ears and hide away, or you may become easily irritated or upset.
*
In BTR treatment we use techniques to stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system. This is key to helping your brain process the trauma.

HELLO πŸ‘‹
*
I've had an unintentional social media hiatus. Life has been busy and something had to give for a while!
So I thought I'd show my face here again and tell you a bit about what happens during BTR;

⏺ I give you time to talk and I listen and really hear you. Together we validate your experience and your feelings.
⏺ I explained how trauma effects your brain so you can understand why you have the symptoms you do.
⏺ You learn how to trigger your parasympathetic nervous system to help you relax.
⏺ The main treatment is quick, sate and very effective, moving the trauma memory from where it is currently trapped to where it should be stored in the brain. Here it becomes a normal memory.
⏺ With the intrusive and debilitating symptoms of trauma gone there is space to live in the moment and think to the future without fear.

Feel free to contact me for more information. I offer a free 15 minute phone call to help you decide if this might be something you would find helpful.

GROUNDING
*
PTSD can leave the sufferer in a state of high alert, feeling easily overwhelmed and anxious.

Grounding techniques bring us bring our attention to the current moment, using our senses.

There are lots of different ones to use but here's one I really like that you can do any time to help yourself connect with the moment you're in;

Sitting down, take a moment to notice which part of your body is in contact with the chair, notice how your feet make contact with the ground, the backs of your legs sinking into the surface of the seat, your back supported. Notice the texture of the chair and how that feels against your body. Perhaps you feel heavy/ supported/still. And now you may like to notice your breathing and gently slow your breath down, perhaps the sensations increase with your inbreath and lighten with the exhale.
*
How do you feel now? Do you feel calmer?

πŸ‘‹, how are you all getting on?
*
I've been very quiet on here for a while now. Somehow not quite finding the right words, enough time or confidence to put myself out there and post anything.
*
To anyone else feeling a little overwhelmed with life, especially as lockdown eases, you're not alone, lots of people are finding it challenging. There's no rush.
