Hey I'm back! After a few months off moving my life to Bristol, I'm dipping my toes back into teaching and hoping to raise some money for a good cause as my dear friend Emily runs the London Marathon in aid of SolarAid 🏃‍♀️☀️

Bristol folk, come join us for a super chilled end to your week and start to the weekend as we explore a gentle, beginner-friendly practice by solar light. Expect cosy vibes, all the props, an extra long savasana, relaxation and tea 🍵

Some snippets of yoga (on and off the mat) in beautiful Mallorca this summer ☀️🌊

The most gorgeous week with the best of friends, full of swimming, sunsets, snorkelling, city strolls, nourishing food, colourful drinks, dancing into the early hours, car karaokes, and a sprinkling of yoga teaching and headstands in paradise. Let's do it again sometime ☺️

Sunrise hours 🌅

There is something extra special about the wee hours of a new day.

In yogic philosophy, the time just before sunrise is known as as Brahma Muhurta. Translated to "the creator's time", this is a time where we may feel more perceptive, creative, imaginative and intuitive. You may find your mind and senses are more alert and active (once you have woken up!) and so it makes a perfect time to practice yoga and turn inward.

Taking your practice outside to observe the sunrise that follows offers additional benefits, including a beautiful display. Research has shown that observing sunrise and sunsets have both physical and psychological benefits - helping us sleep better through circadian rhythm regulation, fostering gratitude, mindfulness and that wonderful feeling of awe.

It's no surprise that many of our camera rolls are filled with sunrise and sunset photos, attempting to capture and bottle that moment and the beauty of the natural world. Plus it's free and happens every day - how fortunate we are ☺️

Movement is medicine (for the soul, body and mind) 🤸‍♀️🏋‍♀️

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme is moving more for our mental health.

This theme has really struck a cord with me. Being someone who has struggled with anxiety from a very young age, I have regularly felt stuck or frozen by endless thoughts. My brain has always defaulted to an overdrive setting, but movement is now my circuit breaker. Getting out of my head and into my body, listening to what my body needs - a long walk, slow, mindful movement on the mat or playtime (handstands are always a good idea).

Movement can take so many forms and also come with great achievements and a sense of accomplishment! I feel so grateful to be able to move every day - to explore new ways of moving, have fun and connect with friends or to get outside in nature.

Yoga āsana is one way to move, but yoga can be taken off the mat into all forms of movement - moving with curiosity, openess and intention (even if that intention is just TO MOVE your body). Mindful movement can offer a sense of calm, stability or control when your mind or other things feel overwhelming. And, hey, has anyone actually ever regretted a workout or walk?

P.S. Moving outside is a bonus if you can this weekend. Breathe in some fresh air, feel alive and say a little thank you to yourself and your body.

Last week I officially graduated and became a qualified yoga teacher. It has been a wonderful whirlwind of 7 months - a truly transformational experience that will forever hold a very special place in my heart. Thank you SO very much to everyone who has supported me along the way.

I am so excited to keep learning, growing as both yoga teacher and student and exploring where this path takes me 🪷

Mindful meditations 🐦

What does meditation look like to you?

I have been reflecting on this question a lot recently, within our final YTT hours and outside in the wild. For me, meditation comes in many shapes and forms. Sitting cross-legged on the floor or a cushion in stillness, eyes closed, for a significant period of time is just one of them.

The intention and focus is the same whatever the activity - one of one-pointedness, ekāgratā (एकाग्रता). The mind settles and focuses on one thing, either internal (e.g. thoughts, breath) or external (e.g. a candle, craft). This enables us to gently dwell in the present, living moment by moment.

These pictures are a glimpse into just one form of meditation for me - mindful walking and bird watching.

So this is a little reminder that meditation can mean different things to different people. If you have written off meditation, claiming "I can't meditate", perhaps you already are or just haven't discovered your form of meditation yet 🤍

Focus 👁

Last week in class, we explored balances through the lens of drishti दृष्टि, developing focus and concentration to help quieten the mind, steady the breath and, maybe, steady the body, even when standing on one leg!

Drishti दृष्टि is the Sanskrit word meaning gaze, view, vision or point of focus. In standing balances, for example, it can be helpful to take the gaze to something external and stationary, on the floor or directly in front of you. The gaze can also be taken inwards, closing the eyes and bringing awareness to the point between your eyebrows, the third eye - antara drishti.

Just like training our muscles to become stronger through certain exercises, the practice of drishti can train your mind to focus more deeply, building concentration, rather than trying to do too many things at once with less success and more distraction (hello watching Netflix while scrolling Instagram and eating your dinner).

If you also feel overwhelmed regularly, perhaps through multitasking at your desk, staring at screens all day, try taking a five minute break to sit or play with balances with different drishti points. This can act like a focus reset, clearing the mind before starting a new period of concentration on a singular task.
