As the world observes Diwali, the Festival of Lights, we extend our warmest wishes to everyone celebrating today.

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most significant festivals in the Indian subcontinent. For many in the Hindu, Sikh and Jain communities, it symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.

This Diwali, we're reflecting on special moments spent with loved ones and celebrating the importance of community.

Last month, we were honoured to welcome Jules Tuckwell and some of the amazing bikers who took part in the Molly Tuckwell Memorial Ride this July to the Hospice. 🏍️

Their incredible dedication, enthusiasm, and generosity have helped raise an amazing £64,162 in loving memory of Molly - all in support of St Peter’s. Thanks to their efforts, more people in our community will receive the care, comfort, and dignity they deserve at the end of their lives. The date for next year’s ride is still to be confirmed, but if you’d like to get involved – either as a rider or a supporter – keep an eye on our website for updates.

A heartfelt thank you to Jules and all the bikers for their continued and inspiring support. You're making a lasting difference. 💙

Congratulations to our Bristol to Paris 2025 riders 🤩

On 24 September, our 26 incredible cyclists were waved off from the Hospice in Brentry by staff and volunteers.

After cycling to Portsmouth to catch an overnight ferry, they enjoyed a ride through the picturesque French countryside. On 28 September, the team reached Paris and circled the Champs-Élysées, before enjoying a celebratory meal.

Liz Holpin was cycling with her husband Pete, in memory of his dad. She said: “Supporting St Peter’s on the Bristol to Paris bike ride gave us the focus and determination to give back to a wonderful charity.”

Liz added: “Working as a team was the high. The challenges were the unexpected cold weather with fog and chaffing!”

Together, the team raised over £55,000 and counting and they're hoping to reach £60,000 — enough to cover the cost of running the Hospice for two whole days. There's still time to help them reach their target. Visit: www.justgiving.com/campaign/bristoltoparis2025

As Hospice Care Week comes to an end, we want to remind everyone that hospice care is more than you think. It’s not just about clinical support - it's about compassion, community and being there when it matters most. 💙

From being up all night with patients to help comfort them, to driving patients to enjoy a Bristol City football match - our dedicated team of Nurses and volunteers show that hospice care touches lives in ways we may not expect.

You can help us create even more memories for end-of-life patients. By volunteering, donating or fundraising for us, we can continue to provide the care, connection and support local patients need.

As we continue to shine a light on the many ways hospice care is ‘more than you think’, we want to take a moment to celebrate Tim, one of our incredible volunteers. ⭐

Tim is a Volunteer Driver who helps patients get to and from the Hospice, making sure that those without transport can still access the care and support they need. But he goes far beyond that.

Earlier this year, Tim took a patient on a four-and-a-half-hour round trip to Monkey World in Dorset - fulfilling a bucket list wish on their 50th birthday. On another occasion, he drove a patient and his young son to a Bristol City football match, giving them cherished time together.

Tim’s compassion behind the wheel reminds us that hospice care is about more than medical support - it's about creating meaningful moments when they matter most.

Last year, we unlocked nearly £129,000 of funding thanks to Gift Aid – that’s enough to pay for 1,000 people like you to receive much needed bereavement support from our Psychological Therapies Team.

Ticking the Gift Aid box takes seconds, but it can make the world of difference to others. Next time you donate, please and help us raise even more money for local people who need us.

As part of Hospice Care Week, we’re reflecting on what hospice care really means - and why it’s more than you might think. 💙

Our clinical team recently joined others aboard the SS Great Britain for a Peace Feast hosted by Bridges for Communities. Over Afghani food, live music and conversation, we shared stories of hospice care - not just about end-of-life support, but about community, compassion and connection.

For many guests, hospice care was an unfamiliar idea. By the end of the evening, people told us they’d learned something new, and some even wanted to visit or volunteer. That’s why our work is more than you think – it’s about opening doors, sparking conversations, and making sure everyone knows we’re here if they ever need us. In grief, there is no ‘right way’ to feel and no single path to follow. However you choose to remember a loved one, everyone is welcome to remember them with us this winter. 🕯️

From attending one of our remembrance events, to adding their name to our Tree of Light or Book of Remembrance - there are many ways to celebrate and remember loved ones who are no longer with us. Visit our website to find out more: https://ow.ly/szwQ50X7IUX

Hospice care isn’t just about clinical support. Our Hospice Neighbour volunteers provide practical help in the community, from grocery shopping to simply sharing a cup of tea and a chat. ☕

Patrick, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease when he was 30, was introduced to Hospice Neighbour Rob, and the two now see each other regularly. When Patrick moved house recently, Rob was on hand to help.

Patrick said: “Rob was there for me - unpacking boxes of keepsakes, filing new DVDs and keeping my collection alphabetised, and arranging books in publication date order. He helped me create my own space, filled with familiar reminders of special times.

“Rob has also picked up on things I can’t do - and some I never could, like sewing band patches onto my gig jacket. But more than that, it’s about time spent with someone I can talk to about anything - the good times and the down days. When Rob visits, I know he’s here because he wants to be.”

Rob is a reminder that hospice care takes many forms. Volunteers like him bring humanity to the experience and help make every moment count. Find out how you can become a Hospice Neighbour here: https://ow.ly/TlXF50X24ke

This Hospice Care Week, we’re celebrating all the different ways we support patients and families. Our care is about more than managing pain and symptoms, it’s about helping people live well and make the most of every moment. 💙

Helen’s dad, Brian, was supported by our Hospice at Home team. Helen said: “Both Mum and I were exhausted, but thanks to Becky, the night-shift nurse who came to support us, we both went off to bed knowing not only that Dad would be safe, but that he would be cared for.

“When I came down in the morning after my first good night’s sleep in ages, Becky and Dad were quietly working together on a paint by numbers picture. Dad had always loved painting and art, and Becky had found just the way to connect with him and help him through the night. I think that the memory of that morning will stay with me forever.”

Stories like this remind us that hospice care is about helping families create meaningful moments, even at the very end of life. ⭐
