💉 Stay Strong. Get Vaccinated. 💉

Childhood vaccinations are the best way to protect your child from serious illnesses such as measles, whooping cough, meningitis and polio.

The NHS childhood vaccination programme provides safe and effective protection for babies, children and young people at key stages as they grow.

If you are a parent or carer, now is a good time to check that your child is up to date with their routine vaccinations.

✔ Vaccines are free on the NHS
✔ They protect your child and help prevent the spread of disease
✔ They have been safely used for many years

If you think your child may have missed a vaccination, please contact the practice and we can help arrange this.

🌙 Eid Mubarak 🌙

Wishing all our patients, staff and community a joyful and peaceful Eid. We hope you have a wonderful time celebrating with family and friends.

After a month of fasting, it’s important to take care when returning to regular eating:

🥗 Ease back into eating
Start with light, balanced meals rather than very large portions straight away.

💧 Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to rehydrate your body.

🍽 Be mindful of rich foods
Traditional Eid foods can be rich and sweet — enjoy them, but try to balance with healthier options.

🍎 Include a variety of foods
Aim for a mix of protein, wholegrains, fruit and vegetables to support your energy levels.

😴 Rest and routine
Try to gradually return to a regular sleep and eating routine.

💊 If you have a long-term condition
If you have diabetes or other health conditions, continue to follow your care plan and seek advice if needed.

Most importantly, enjoy the celebrations and look after your wellbeing.

🦠 Meningitis – What you need to know

Following recent reports of meningitis cases in Kent, we want to reassure our patients and share some important information about symptoms and when to seek help.

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It can be serious, but early treatment greatly improves outcomes.

Symptoms to look out for

Symptoms can appear quickly and may include:
• High temperature (fever)
• Severe headache
• Stiff neck
• Sensitivity to light
• Feeling or being sick
• Confusion or difficulty concentrating
• Drowsiness or difficulty waking

In babies and young children symptoms may also include:
• Unusual crying
• Floppy or unresponsive behaviour
• Refusing feeds
• A bulging soft spot on the head

Some people with meningococcal infection may develop a rash that does not fade when pressed.

When to seek urgent help

Call 999 or go to A&E immediately if someone has symptoms of meningitis and:
• Is difficult to wake or very drowsy
• Has seizures (fits)
• Has breathing difficulties
• Has a rash that does not fade under pressure

If you are concerned but symptoms are less severe, you can also contact NHS 111 for advice.

Prevention

Vaccination is the best protection. The NHS offers several vaccines that protect against different types of meningitis, including:
✔ MenB vaccine (for babies)
✔ MenACWY vaccine (for teenagers and young adults)
✔ Hib vaccine (part of routine childhood immunisations)

Make sure your child is up to date with their vaccinations.

If you have concerns about symptoms or vaccinations, please contact the practice.

🧠 Brain Awareness Week 🧠

Your brain controls everything you do – from your thoughts and emotions to movement, memory and sleep. This week is about raising awareness of brain health and the conditions that can affect it.

Brain health can be influenced by:
✔️ Staying physically active
✔️ Eating a balanced diet
✔️ Getting enough sleep
✔️ Managing stress
✔️ Keeping socially and mentally active

If you’re experiencing symptoms such as ongoing headaches, memory concerns, mood changes, weakness, numbness or anything that feels unusual for you, please don’t ignore it — speak to a clinician.

Looking after your brain is just as important as looking after your heart or lungs.

Let’s use this week to start conversations about neurological conditions, mental wellbeing and how we can all support better brain health.

🌙 World Sleep Day 🌙

Sleep is essential for both physical and mental health. Good quality sleep helps to support your immune system, improve concentration, regulate mood and reduce the risk of long-term health conditions.

Most adults need around 7–9 hours of sleep per night, but many of us struggle to get enough.

Simple steps that can help improve sleep:
✔ Keep a regular sleep routine
✔ Avoid screens at least an hour before bed
✔ Limit caffeine and alcohol in the evening
✔ Create a calm, dark and comfortable sleep environment
✔ Try relaxation techniques if your mind feels busy

If poor sleep is affecting your daily life, mood or overall health, please contact the practice. Support and advice are available.

A good night’s sleep is not a luxury — it’s part of looking after your health.

🍎 International School Meals Day 🍎

Today we recognise the importance of healthy school meals in supporting children’s growth, learning and wellbeing.

Nutritious food helps children:
✔ Concentrate and learn
✔ Build strong bones and muscles
✔ Maintain a healthy weight
✔ Develop lifelong healthy habits

For many families, school meals also play an important role in ensuring children have access to a balanced meal each day.

If you think your child may be eligible for free school meals, you can check through your local council’s website. Free school meals can also help schools access additional funding to support pupils.

Healthy children are better able to thrive — at school and beyond.

🚭 No Smoking Day 🚭

Today is a great opportunity to think about stopping smoking — whether it’s your first attempt or one of many.

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. It reduces your risk of heart disease, stroke, cancer and lung conditions — and the benefits begin within days.

We understand that quitting can be challenging. You don’t have to do it alone.

If you would like support, we can:
✔ Offer advice and guidance
✔ Prescribe stop smoking treatments where appropriate
✔ Signpost you to local stop smoking services

Free support is also available via the NHS:

Every attempt brings you closer to stopping for good. If you’re thinking about quitting, today could be the day to start.

💙 Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month 💙

Ovarian cancer can affect anyone with ovaries, and early symptoms can often be vague. Knowing the signs and seeking advice early can make a difference.

Symptoms to look out for include:
• Persistent bloating
• Feeling full quickly or loss of appetite
• Pelvic or abdominal pain
• Needing to urinate more urgently or more often

If these symptoms are new, persistent (most days), and last for 3 weeks or more, please contact the practice to speak to a clinician.

Most symptoms will not be cancer, but it’s always best to get them checked.

Raising awareness helps encourage earlier diagnosis and supports better outcomes.
