I recently communicated with a horse, whose care giver contacted me to ask if I could have a chat with them and see what was going on. They requested I asked;

✨ Are you in pain?
✨ What could I do differently to help?
✨ Why are you bucking?

When I tuned in the horse was extremely angry, I asked what was making him so angry and he began to show me this pain and pressure through his neck and into his shoulder/either area. This was causing him discomfort and he wasn't happy.

He went on to show me that his caregiver was continuing to ask him to do things and despite him saying no in every way he could the people around him weren't listening. He went on to say what else can I do I'm shouting is allowed as I can.

I asked about the bucking and again he said how angry he was, there were things he didn't want to do and it was causing discomfort. How else am I meant to say no to his question?

I asked how long had this been going on, to which he replied as long as he can remember. The anger got worse with time and underneath this was a deep hurt and sadness.

He went onto show me him being driven in a cart when he was little, he was in pain and trying to say no, through bucking, rearing and kicking out. No one listened.

He went on to say, "People have always demanded so much of me and I'm tired, there is only so much I can take."

I finished by asking Was there anything that you could do to help him? His request was, he said, could his caregiver listen to him more and what he's trying to say. He said he's sad that he isn't listened to and doesn't know what to do.

I communicated this with his caregiver who confirmed his behavior is very angry, and it's been going on as long as she can remember, even when she bought him she was told he had severe behaviour problem. She confirmed he had been driven and he doesn't seem comfortable when ridden.

We have a treatment booked next week to follow up from the communication.

If you're interested in booking the communication and treatment package I am offering this for £100 instead of £120 throughout October and November.

Animal communication is a natural ability that we all have. Through rediscovering ourselves and learning to understand animals we learn to connect and hear them in a totally new way. By communicating with animals in this way we can learn about their health, emotional and environmental problems.

Horse peoples commitment to believing dominance theory / “Alpha” theory despite the lack of evidence showing it to be a real thing is an incredible thing to watch.

There is currently very little, if any, evidence suggesting that horses have a static herd hierarchy in natural environments and that even IF they did, that said hierarchy would apply to how they view humans.

The man who initially perpetuated alpha theory with research on wolves later rescinded his enter belief system due to said study being impacted by the stressors of the domestic lifestyle in addition to the fact that wolf packs are generally family groups, meaning that the older more experienced wolves did take on leadership roles to educate their younger pups… but not for the purpose of exerting dominance.

Now, horses are not wolves but similar findings have been reported.

Much of what is viewed to be attempts of asserting dominance in domestic horse herds is actually resource guarding.

A horse guarding a PERCEIVED lack of resources, this does not mean that the resource actually has to be lacking

Reduced space, infrequent hay feedings, environmental frustration and general stress can increase the aggression we see in domesticated horses.

In feral herds, horses don’t spend much time engaging in aggressive behaviours because such behaviours are expensive physically and risk injury.

Sure, we see lots of photography and video of this happening but those tend to be the more “exciting” shots and thereby more popular, not necessarily more common.

Even in instances where feral stallions are actually fighting, it isn’t an attempt to be the “alpha.” It is attempt to protect and/or secure resources such as breeding rights to mares, space etc.

In addition to this, young horses, especially male horses, will practice fighting behaviours in play and this can be mistaken for real aggression.

Dominance theory is used by humans to label horse behaviour as “naughty” or “disrespectful” which is then often used to justify use of physical punishment.

The issue with this is that much of the behaviour we label as dominant behaviour from horses towards humans stems from fear, frustration, confusion, pain and general stress.

Escape behaviours are merely a horse trying to evade an undesirable situation, not an attempt to exert dominance.

Horses are natural peace makers and would generally prefer to not put up a fight.

But, so much of horse training in the human lens involves disciplining fear based behaviours, creating more fear and then blaming the horse for responding with stress.

We create the very types of environments that make it more likely to see what we perceive as “dominant” behaviours and then blame the horse for it.

The vast majority of undesirable domestic horse behaviours are directly caused by, or at least contributed to by, human influence.

So, it’s about time we reflect inwardly, get with the times and accept the fact that research doesn’t support the idea of dominance theory.

The level of attachment people experience with this theory despite the lack of evidence I think speaks for how desperate many of us are to justify our use of force in horse training.

It is such an odd hill to die on and the level of ferocity that people who speak out on the myth of dominance theory are met with I think exemplifies the crux of the problem: a desire for complete control at any cost rather than a desire to understand and communicate.

Communication and partnership will get you a lot further with horses than dominance, despite what much of traditional horse training may have taught you.

Here is a good fairly recent study on dominance pertaining to horse training: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0737080617300059

“Highlights

It is unlikely that horse–horse social status translates to analogues of human–horse interactions.

The concept of leadership as advocated in many training manuals proves to be unreliable in the horse.

Horses' responses to training are more likely a result of reinforcement rather than a result of humans attaining high social status and a leadership role.

Knowledge of horses' natural behavior and learning capacities are more reliable in explaining training outcomes than the application of dominance and leadership concepts.”

I want to tell you about a horse I worked with today.

We will call him Perry.

Perry was extremely anxious, he had severe separation anxiety and seemed so on edge. His human said he had been like this since she could remember.

Perry was an X racer and retired from racing not so long ago at the age of 14, his caregiver wanted to find out more about how she could help him with his anxiety.

I connected with him and asked him to tell me about his anxiety, he said he was anxious his whole life, he didn't know when it started at first it was just all he knew.

He told me that he didn't like what he did, he had no choice and he was made to do it, it was never enjoyable as he was always on edge. His caregiver confirmed that he was good at racing he was fast, but he seemed to just want to go as fast as he could and then race back to the yard after.

He told me during his last racing home, he had 3 people who cared for him who were kind, a young girl with brown hair, a tall young man and his caregiver now. This was all confirmed correct.

He went on to say that in his earlier days it wasn't like this, he was always on edge and he frequently got punished for his behaviour, no one seemed to understand him.

He then went on to show me an even earlier memory of when he had anxiety during weaning.
Himself and other foals had all been separated from their mother's very early he was scared, anxious confused and more so a deep heartache and still holding onto a tremendous amount of grief.

The picture above is as I released his acupoints for grief. He spent a good couple of minutes yawning and releasing.

I helped him with EFT & Matrix, DNA Repair and Energy Healing to work through and process his trauma. I held the space while he proceeded and released what he could during this time.

I finished with a full energy clearing, healing and balancing to support him.

If you would like to have a communication with your horse, to understand what he maybe be trying to tell you and to improve your relationship with them then I can help.

I am fully booked up until November.
Taking bookings for November onwards!

🐎Counselling & Therapy for Horse Women 🐎

Since starting my private counselling and psychotherapy work I ve noticed a lot of my clients are coming in from the horsey world which isnt suprising, as I have such a connection to this through my horse therapy.

Life with horses can be deeply rewarding, but it doesn’t always mean life feels easy.

Many women in the horse world juggle endless responsibilities, carry hidden struggles, and often put the needs of others (and their horses) before their own.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or worn down, you don’t have to carry it alone.

Many of the women I support are navigating:
✨ Everyday life struggles that feel heavy
✨ Relationship or family difficulties
✨ Grief and loss, whether of loved ones, horses, or a way of life
✨ A deep sense of being “stuck” or running on empty

🌱 How I Can Support You

In therapy with me, you’ll find:
💬 A safe, welcoming space to be yourself — no judgment, no pressure
🤝 Gentle, empathetic support — working at your pace
💛 Space to heal, gain clarity, and reconnect with your own needs

📅 I’m now opening my diary to welcome more women from the horse world who feel they would benefit from counselling. If this resonates, I’d love to hear from you.

Get in touch for a relaxed, no-pressure chat to see if therapy feels right for you.

✨ A lovely catch-up with a long term client, treating her two older horses and meeting this wonderful new addition to her herd. 🐴

When he first arrived, he had an ill-fitting saddle, leaving him sore through his back, lats and into his glutes. The saddle has been sorted and he responded well to his treatment.

During our session, we worked gently with cranial sacral myofascial release and sports massage to ease the tension through his body and support his movement.

He’s now in a much better place to continue building his fitness and education over the coming months. It’s always so rewarding to see the difference this work can make for both horse and rider. 💛

If you’re interested in booking a treatment, I have availability through the end of September and into October.

We believe connected relationships are key to healing trauma and attachment wounds. This is at the forefront of our work.

The felt sense of connection—with ourselves, with others, with animals, with nature, with our conception of spirituality or the divine—is what brings meaning to our lives.

At the end of life, when we look back, achievements and material things will matter much less than the quality of our relationships, our lived experiences of love and care.

In fact, the quality of our relationships affects not just our sense of meaning but also our psychological and physiological health.

As the well-established field of Attachment Theory teaches, we need to form safe, caring bonds with other beings in order to have healthy nervous systems. Secure attachment creates neural pathways that are crucial for the functioning of our brains. In other words, our biology is intertwined with the natural yearnings of our heart.

As mammals, we are born with an innate desire to connect. We yearn for experiences of trust and mutual understanding.

Connected relationships are central to our wellbeing.

Guiding my clients to connect with our herd is one of the most rewarding things I do. A lot of the young people I work with struggle with relationships or friendships, so watching this connected relationship form brings a warm feeling to my heart. The profound transformation it also brings with it is just phenomenal and I love facilitating them on this journey ❤️

😁 Before & After

Yesterday, I had the privilege of working with a mare who had been displaying what her caregivers described as "behavioral challenges." They told me she didn’t want to be caught, resisted grooming and tacking up, and struggled when ridden on the left rein.

When I arrived, I could immediately sense her distress. She was in a highly activated state, reluctant to enter her stable. As her caregiver attempted to put on her headcollar, she turned her head away and lifted it high, a clear and emphatic NO.

👂Listening to Her Story

Through our communication, she shared that she felt unheard and rushed. She disliked being stabled and wanted more time to process requests. She had been trying to express her discomfort, but no one had been listening.

During my physical assessment, I noticed some tension, but nothing obvious enough to fully explain her resistance. So, I asked her directly:

"What else is causing you discomfort?"

She showed me an uncomfortable pinching sensation in her neck on the left side, which was confirmed when I asked her caregiver about her behavior—frequent head-shaking. She also expressed pain in her poll from her head being held down and a strong dislike for the martingale. She had been trying to communicate this, but her signals had gone unnoticed.

💕 Acknowledgment & Healing

I relayed her concerns and recommended:
✅ Removing the martingale to relieve pressure on her poll
✅ Slowing down interactions to allow her time to process
✅ Respecting her "No" and giving her more autonomy

She responded beautifully to the physical treatment, releasing much of the built-up tension. I'll be checking in with her again in six weeks for a follow-up.

This session was a powerful reminder of the importance of listening, to what our horses are telling us, both physically and emotionally. When we create space for them to be heard, true transformation begins.

Would you like to deepen your connection with your horse? Please get in contact to see how I can help.
