Deep into January now and many of our well meaning resolutions have fallen by the wayside. But can we please stop giving ourselves such a hard time?

January is not the time to overhaul our lives, it’s a time to give ourselves a break, to meet ourselves with gentle kindness and to stop putting pressure on ourselves to meet unrealistic demands.

If you want to read my thoughts on how to meet yourself with kindness and care right now, head on over to Substack.

I’ve culled my reading list!

Making the decision this January to focus my reading to support my seasonal work has felt liberating.

Because it turns out that saying no to one thing frees me up to say yes not to less, but to more.

My reading isn’t simply a pleasant distraction from my life right now, instead it is making me feel more deeply connected to the land and the weather and more deeply connected to my own internal landscape and seasons - and that is exactly what I want right now.

My current seasonal reading list:

Twelve Moons by Hal Borland
Cacophony of Bone by Ker ini Dochataigh
Twelve Moons by Caro Giles
Anam Cara by John O’Donohue

Day Ten: October

Withdrawal & Rest

“Today, honour the hard work with time for rest. Celebrate dusk, draw inwards.

By Day Ten, the movement turns inward. Today marks a retreat, a necessary return to shelter.

After the shedding of what no longer fits, and the careful reorientation that followed, there is a quieter need now: to stop moving, to stop adjusting, and to allow what has changed to be held. This, too, is part of the cycle.

Rest is not an absence of work. It is where the work begins to settle.

Today, do not rush out. You have worked so hard. Today, rest. Rest and wait, even perhaps until dusk. And only then go out, if you want. Or you prefer and you might be feeling lazy (like me), sit by a window and witness the light slowly bleed from the day.

There might be a quiet settling within you, and urge to explain less, to engage less with what pulls at you from the outside. This is not withdrawal from life, but a turning toward its deeper rhythms. Energy that has been spent must be restored again.”

The Omen Days: Day 6

June, Embodiment

“Today, I suggest you head out at midday to catch the sun at its highest. Even in winter, just beyond the Solstice, the sun’s energy is there if you simply allow yourself to feel it. By the sixth Omen Day, the world feels fuller, rounder, more inhabited. We are halfway through, which means today belongs to June.

June energy is unmistakable. It is not the shy promise of spring, nor the tentative steps of early growth, but something richer – the fullness of the sun, the turning toward the Summer Solstice, the deeper blossoming that settles not only into the land but into the body itself. Today we ask ourselves: how can we live a life that is informed by the work of the last few days? One that is truly our own? Joyful and fully embodied? How can we allow it to take root within us and live the truth of it?”

Day Five: May

Joy

“Today, the fifth Omen Day, arrives with an unexpected joy in the form of a rare blue sky – a sky so clear it feels like a blessing, a joyous invitation to play. The light is crystalline, and everything feels light and breezy. It’s as though the whole world has tilted toward delight overnight.

And if ever there was a month of joy, it must be May, the month for this Omen Day. A month of rampaging colour: of dark blue (English, not Spanish) bluebells and frothy pink hawthorn, of rainbow tulips and fresh new neon greens of spring.

Let today carry that same sense of lively possibility – a world seeking joy after months of waiting.”
