Today, we begin Hate Crime Awareness Week.

In Bristol, Hate crimes rose by 15.5% last year, an alarming increase.

The mental health impact of witnessing or experiencing a hate crime is immense; it can lead to increases in stress, anxiety, and social isolation. It has a devastating effect on someone's sense of identity

If you or anyone else you know has been affected by or been a victim of a hate crime or discrimination, you are not alone.

Bristol Mind is dedicated to supporting you to find your confidence and voice as we stand up to hate together.

We focus purely on your mental health and wellbeing, or jointly work on your case with any of our 5 BHCDS partners, ensuring you receive a holistic, trauma-informed service.

Bristol is a brilliant, vibrant, and exciting city. But it can all be a bit overwhelming.

Here are some tips to get through Freshers' Week and beyond.

1: Talk to people. It sounds simple, but many people put on a brave face and do it all alone. Speak to your family and friends from home, but also to your new flatmates or course friends about how you feel. People may be relieved to share anxieties!

2: Visit Student Support. Most universities have a Nightline service too. They are trained to help new students settle in.

3: Try to not go home for the first month or so. By lasting through this period, you may find that everything seems a little bit easier.

4: Open up to new experiences and new people. You don’t need to go to pubs and clubs every night and feel awful the next day.

5: Eat well. It sounds straightforward, but it can help with stress, not to mention keeping your energy levels up.

6:Try to attend all your lectures and seminars. Apart from making your academic life easier, you’ll find other like-minded people on your course.

7: Keep going. You’re doing much better than you think you are. It’s ok to cry. It’s ok to miss home. It’s normal.

🐾 It’s National Dog Day! 🐶💙
Dogs aren’t just loyal companions—they’re also amazing for our mental health. From lowering stress and anxiety to encouraging exercise and boosting connection, our four-legged friends bring comfort and joy when we need it most.

Today, we celebrate the unconditional love and the numerous benefits that dogs bring us every day. 🐕✨

Here's one from our very own IT and Office Admin:

'I adopted my French Bulldog, Wilbur, as an emotional support animal.
Since then, he has been with me through many ups and downs. He has become my little shadow, always begging for treats and attention, snoring the house down, and keeping me afloat when the world gets a little too much.'

🚨 51km. 2,000m of elevation. One huge challenge. 🚨

Tomorrow (9th August), Reece is taking on an ultra-marathon in the Brecon Beacons!

It’s going to be brutal. Still, he's running it to raise funds for Bristol Mind, your local mental health charity in your community.

We offer low-cost counselling, confidential helplines, and specialist support for refugees and asylum seekers, making sure no one in Bristol faces mental health struggles alone.

💙 How you can help:

Donate – every pound goes directly to supporting Bristol Mind and Mental Health support.

Share – spread the word so more people can make a difference.

Cheer Reece on – training for 51km is no small feat!

Let’s smash this target and help Bristol Mind keep changing lives. 💪

About us...

Bristol Mind was originally founded in 1965 and is now a registered charity and a limited company. We are a Local Mind Association (LMA) affiliated to National Mind though independent of it i.e. we receive no direct funding from National Mind and make our own decisions about the services we offer. As a registered charity we are managed by a group of trustees who volunteer their time to oversee and support the work of the organisation. We recognise that each individual is a resource for their own recovery. Many of our workers, volunteers and trustees have themselves experienced the impact of emotional and mental distress.

Our aims:

  • To be a resource for all people in Bristol who identify themselves as having mental health or emotional support needs, and those who support them

  • To promote emotional and mental wellbeing through delivering high quality services in partnership with others where we can
