Injury of the Month: Plantar Fasciitis

Ever felt a sharp pain that just won't go away? You know, the kind of pain that makes you dread getting out of bed in the morning or holds you back from your favourite run? This month, we're shining a light on a common but often misunderstood condition: Plantar Fasciitis.

What is it?
Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects your heel bone to your toes. It’s a frequent cause of heel pain, especially in the morning or after periods of rest.

How can physiotherapy help?
Accurate Diagnosis: We'll perform a thorough assessment to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.

Pain Relief: Using techniques like manual therapy and targeted massage, we can help reduce your pain.

Rehabilitation Plan: We'll create a personalised exercise program to strengthen the foot and ankle muscles, and improve flexibility.

Preventing Recurrence: We'll address the root cause of the injury and provide you with the tools and advice you need to help prevent it from coming back.

Don't let Plantar Fasciitis slow you down!
If you're experiencing symptoms, don't wait for the pain to get worse. Our expert team at Bristol Physio is here to help you get back to the activities you love.

Book your assessment today and take the first step towards a pain-free life!

Helping you move well, feel well, live well!

Physiotherapy isn’t just for recovery — it’s for anyone who wants to stay active, prevent injury, and move with confidence.

📚 What the research says:
✅ Physio-led exercise improves mobility & reduces pain in many conditions (Cochrane Review, 2021)
✅ Strength & balance training can cut fall risk by 34% (Sherrington et al., 2019)
✅ Targeted rehab exercises reduce injury recurrence & boost performance (Lauersen et al., 2018)

At Bristol Physio, we combine expert assessment, hands-on treatment, and personalised exercise plans so you can get back to what you love — and keep doing it.

OUR SPONSOR - Stepanies London Marathon Journey

Injury Number 1 – pain on the outside of the left foot and ankle
Diagnosis – Peroneal Tendinopathy
Problem – Steph has some reduced strength and stability around her left foot causing the muscles and tendons on the outside of her lower leg to have to work extra hard and become irritated and overloaded.
Solution – Load management/training volume, improve foot stability and strength

Load management/training volume tips
Allow 16-20 weeks of training time
Gradually build up your mileage over time on average around 10% per week
Aim for no more than 4 runs per week
Avoid junk miles – running that lacks a specific training purpose
Allow time for strength and conditioning
Get 8 hours sleep – rest and recovery are the most important aspect of training
Fuel your body well – 1.2 to 2kg of protein per kg of body weight, minimum 30g fibre, eat your veggies!
Lay off the sugar – excess sugar promotes production of chemicals that increase inflammation in the body which affects recovery
Keep alcohol to a minimum – alcohol supresses the production of proteins needed to repair after exercise
Manage your stress – stress can affect the immune system and slow down recovery time

Important targets for strength and conditioning
Balance work – lack of balance and proprioception can to a lack of stability and increased injury risk
Strong calves –there are 2 muscles in your calf the gastrocnemius and the soleus so its important to work them both.
Big toe – the big toe is so important for an efficient running gait and is often weak and or stiff in symptomatic runners.
Intrinsic foot stability strength – there are 26 bones, 33 joints and 29 muscles in the human foot alone – coordinated movement of all this is essential for pain free running
