Supporting the lives of older people has been part of the vision of the St Monica Trust since it began over 100 years ago.

Our aim is to help older people live independently in their own community for as long as possible. We do this by helping individuals with financial support through our Individual Giving Fund.

The feedback we receive from the recipients of these grants and their support workers demonstrates the importance of this work and the impact it can have on individuals' lives.

If you know someone 55+ living in Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire and facing a difficult time, our team might be able to help them.

Today, we are looking back on an inclusive evening enjoyed last month at Monica Wills House retirement village. A special community performance by our โ€˜Tea & Talesโ€™ group was proudly hosted, followed by a festive social that brought together our residents and members of the wider South Bristol community.

Thank you to To***co Factory Theatres and all the other community teams involved this autumn who helped bring this community project together.

๐ŸŒŸ Meet Ollie: from Apprentice Finance Assistant to Deputy Financial Accounting Manager! ๐ŸŒŸ

Nine years ago, Ollie joined us as one of our very first apprentices. What started as a stepping stone has become a thriving career.

Rather than going to university, Ollie chose to earn while learning. With a love for logic and numbers, heโ€™s worked through Levels 2, 3, and 4 at the Trust โ€” and is now tackling the Level 7 ACCA qualification.

Support from mentors like his line manager, a welcoming team, and a culture that values progression and well-being have all had a big impact on Ollieโ€™s progress here.

His advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship?
๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œDo it. Iโ€™ve never regretted joining. Itโ€™s changed my life.โ€

Weโ€™re proud to create an environment where people can grow, achieve, and thrive.

As our Improving Connections Fund series comes to a close, weโ€™re celebrating the projects that have made a real difference for older people across our communities.

Today, weโ€™re spotlighting the final two organisations whose work has helped tackle loneliness and strengthen connections.

๐ŸŒŸ Alive Activities: Share and Repair Cafรฉ

Aliveโ€™s Share and Repair Cafรฉ created intergenerational spaces where older people could share skills, knowledge and lived experience, from crafts and cooking to tai chi, meditation and home maintenance.

Across 13 sessions, the project celebrated community expertise and connection, and has since produced a How-to Guide to support replication in other areas.

โ€œLovely to mix with people you wouldn't usually mix with. What the project is doing is wonderful, bringing people together and joyful, accessible and healthy activity.โ€

๐ŸŒŸ Coniston Community Association: Coniston Connects

Coniston Community Association launched Coniston Connects to support older residents in Patchway, a priority neighbourhood where many people continued to feel isolated following the pandemic.

The project offered free activities, hot lunches and subsidised transport, creating a welcoming space for people to reconnect at their own pace. Participants reported improved well-being, new friendships and a renewed sense of belonging.

Thank you to all ten organisations for your hard work and dedication to tackling loneliness among older people.

Our Improving Connections Fund forms part of our long-term commitment to fostering connection and inclusion in later life.

Today, weโ€™re spotlighting two organisations whose projects helped turn that commitment into action.

๐ŸŒŸ Carers Support Centre: Befriending and Connection Service

Carers Support Centre launched a Befriending and Connection Service to reduce loneliness among older carers in South Gloucestershire.

Carers were matched with trained volunteers for six weekly phone calls offering companionship, emotional support, and signposting to further support. Feedback from both carers and volunteers was positive, highlighting the value of personalised support and connection.

โ€œI have really enjoyed talking to herโ€ฆ I feel so guilty thinking of myself. The Befriender has given me a lot of encouragement in venturing out on my own.โ€

๐ŸŒŸ Talk Club

Talk Club expanded its work with men aged 55+, establishing 10 new peer-led groups โ€” doubling its original target.

Combining talking, listening, exercise and creative activities, the project grew beyond North Somerset into Bristol and Bath & North East Somerset, helping increase social connection, reduce loneliness, and improve both physical and mental well-being.

โ€œIโ€™m 58. After being in a dark place, Talk Club has given me back my life. I have made new friendships and brought me out from isolating away from people and situations. It has made me realise that I am not alone and not the only one suffering.โ€

Weโ€™re proud to support work that promotes connection and helps people feel a sense of belonging at any age.

Weโ€™ll be sharing our final fund stories tomorrow.
