These green lemons were fresh from the grove behind me as I practiced my sunrise yoga on the roof terrace last week. The terracotta tiles were cold, but the warm sun was fabulous.

But of course, there are still flies and bugs, and the idyllic bay still offers up the chug of boat engines. Even in paradise there are things to take issue with, if you want to.

Our yoga practice doesn’t need to be in a beautiful and inspiring environment (although it is wonderful!). The end of the bed, the corner of the studio, tuning in to a few breaths at our desk with a taller spine - it all counts. Eyes closed and tune in - it doesn’t matter where you are.

Even the most challenging of environments offers opportunities to find full enjoyment and appreciation with the right mindset.

My family life with a teenage tearaway is hovering around Def Con 3. It can get pretty intense, but I’m showing up as the best parent I can be and riding the storm, as I know it will pass.

And as every good parent knows, it is exactly the right time to go away for a yoga weekend!(*?%*)

I’m off, this weekend, handing over the reins to my partner, turning off my phone and immersing myself fully in yoga with over 100 other yoga teachers, being taught by some of the most senior teachers in the world today.

Should I go?

Absolutely, it’s important. And it shouldn’t wait until my need of it becomes urgent.

A fancy car doesn’t make you a better driver. And harder, fancier yoga poses don’t make you a better yogi.

Which of these sound right to you:

1) If our yoga feels hard, then we must be getting more benefit.

2) If it feels easy, then it can’t be ‘doing’ anything.

3) If we invest more in something, it has to pay us back with what we want.

Think again. There is a false belief that if we do something that feels hard, or do more of it, it will give us better results.

Of course this can’t be true. In the same way that eating more and more chocolate will make me feel better and better isn’t true.

One of my students said she feels the same after her yoga class as she does when she gets back from holiday.

We can rekindle our summer mindset and live with more ease and joy. Not by glossing over the trials or ignoring the worries. By regularly resetting and reconnecting with our clearest head and our best heart.

Regular yoga practice is front and centre of how to do this, and it works every time.

Find out my top 3 ways to keep that summer feel-good vibe in my latest blog post (link in the bio).

In the delightful way that teenagers sometimes can, my son is often uncooperative and moody. On a good day, I see him as asserting his independence and ride the wave. On a bad day when my patience is thin, it can get a little ugly.

We are going on holiday in a week and it is looking a little rocky. It might not be the hoped for restorative time where we can recharge. Expectations are set very low.

It has definitely been stressful with all the curveballs that get thrown into our family life. This level of stress is manageable and I know life gets a lot worse than this.

To find out my top 3 ways I work with my stress levels, head over to my latest blog post (link in the bio) and let me know yours.

Once school broke up for the summer, I had an idea in my head that my teenage boys would sleep late. It turns out I got the other kind of teenage boys. They are up early and I was disappointed to miss out on a summer of quiet morning yoga practice then leisurely coffee.

My expectations set me up for a mismatch with reality.

It is easy for expectations to hit that mismatch in our yoga practice too. If you are hoping yoga will meet your expectations every time, your in for a bumpy ride. Of course it might, it usually does, it is brilliant at that, but sometimes it won’t.

But even more brilliant than meeting your expectations, yoga can do something far better, every time, if you are open to it.
