The beautiful Chioggia Beetroot. A seriously beautiful vegetable with some seriously beautiful health benefits. Rich in beta-carotene, folate and vitamin K and C, beetroot has been shown to lower blood pressure and LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol.

Just be careful eating too many - in excess can cause kidney stones for those prone and may turn your 💦 pink (ifyouknowyouknow 💗)

More proof that organic is better!

Despite years of research linking low level pesticide exposure to health risks we still buy non organic fruit and vegetables as the norm and organic is still prohibitively expensive to many people!

Children and pregnant women are the most affected by pesticide levels in food - links to cancers, hormone disruption and neurotoxicity in children. No thanks!

This study found strawberries, spinach and peppers had some of the worst levels of pesticides absorbed by the body. Where you can buy organic, remember the more demand there is the more commonplace organic food will become.

Winter solstice 🌒

A day to slow down, pause, reflect and then look forward. For thousands of years humans have celebrated the winter solstice as the start of earths regeneration 🌍. But the solstice often gets ignored in modern times, people don’t remember the significance of the day other than the lack of daylight.

The solstice traditionally marked the beginning of the Pagan festival of Yule, a celebration of the rebirth of the sun, as we move closer to spring 🌱. And tomorrow the days start getting longer 💫

Today we will light a candle and take a little moment. So if you remember, take a breath and enjoy a pause in amongst the chaos and absolute overwhelmingness of Christmas. 🕯

Feeling proud 🏅

I went way out of my comfort zone and did the Bristol Half Marathon today. I’m not a natural runner 🥵but it was something I definitely wanted to achieve. Some things that helped me pre, during and post running today:

🏃‍♀️ Mg spray: used this before & after the run. Magnesium is required for energy production, muscle recovery and protection from oxidative damage (=increased when we run). It also helps reduce tiredness, maintain normal blood pressure and reduce lactic acid built up. This is an essential mineral for runners!

🏃‍♀️ Running gel. Commonly used by long distance runners as a quick way of getting CARBS into your muscles. Carbohydrates can get a bad rep, but we need to understand is that carbs are humans primary fuel. They are stored in the muscle and liver as glycogen. When you need it (e.g. when running), the body converts them into energy. ✔️✔️✔️

🏃‍♀️Vitamin C. I took a good dose because our bodies use more vitamin C up when we are stressed (and long distance running is a major stress on the body). It’s important to consume vitamin C every day as our bodies are unable to store it and it’s an important antioxidant for the inflammation caused by running. Be careful not to overdose as this can cause stomach upset 😬

🏃‍♀️ Arnica: pre and post run. A homeopathic remedy to treat muscle strain and inflammation for runners.

🏃‍♀️ Nesquik. Probably a surprising one to hear from a nutritional therapist and I’m sure there are far better suggestions from a qualified sports nutritionist (which I am not!) But Nesquik post race is reputedly one of the best things to have after a long run because it contains a decent whack of protein + carbs (necessary to repair those muscles) Ideally you want to consume between 15-25g of protein post workout (around 500ml of Nesquik + milk). It also helps rehydrate. Compared to plain milk, water or a lot of sports drinks, it contains double the carbohydrate content, ideal for tired muscles.

Well done to all the runners and supporters today. Amazing atmosphere in Brizzle 👏👏👏

Last of the summer salads…🌻

…before the autumn sets in 🍁

Has anyone else got slightly obsessed with putting fruit in their salads? (And I’m not talking 80’s inspired fruit salad desserts here 😉)

For dinner we had a beautiful artichoke & apple ‘slaw + warm quinoa and chickpeas with cucumber, tomatoes & strawberries. Both have a touch of in the dressing - blueberry and pomegranate apple cider vinegar, which not only tastes incredible but helps balance my blood sugars at mealtimes. Bravissimo! 👌👌👌

Gorgeous salads every colour of the rainbow 🌈

A friendly reminder to take advantage of the summer and the huge amount of seasonal veggies available to eat right now!

Eating seasonally is not only better for the environment, but as I always bang on about, the food we eat tends to suit what your body requires more of during the season you are in. Summer salads 🤩 Doesn’t get much better than this!
