St Werburghs Medicine Garden

St Werburghs Medicine Garden We are a group of herbalists and growers, inspired by our love of herbs, who have set up a small community medicine garden in St Werburghs.

We are group of herbalists and growers, inspired by our love of herbs, who have combined our skills to set up this community medicine garden on an allotment in St Werburghs. The plants in the garden consist of both common and rarer native herbs alongside useful herbs from other countries. The garden is an educational resource for the whole community. We are gradually planting more and more wonderful medicinal herbs to teach people how to identify the plants and how to harvest them to make medicines. It is important to us that this knowledge is kept alive. We want people to have an opportunity to learn about medicinal plants whilst growing them. We are still developing the site and creating a new bed system to a permaculture design which will include beds full of herbs specific to body systems, a bed of endangered herbs and a bed for useful forgotten native herbs. At the moment we borrow tools so we would be like to able to have our own resources, a shed to store them and in the future our dream is to have an covered teaching area. We have a few herbs that we have grown from seed, propagated or have been given but we still need more. For most of the year we have open days on the first and third sunday of the month where we work on the garden as well as skill-share. In 2014 so far we have shared information about: the different propagating methods; the medicinal uses of plants for the nervous system and digestive system; harvesting and making infused oils; and how to make medicinal teas and decoctions. How to find us: We are on the plot of allotments that are reached by going past the Farm pub and along the cycle path. we are the second plot on the right after the path that leads down to the self-builds.

Want to know how to use the herbs & spices in your kitchen to make potent medicines? Learn to make quick cough syrups, chest salves, bitter liqueurs, immune stocks, golden milk and different fermented foods. We teach how to make medicine to support immunity, digestion, blood sugar and inflammation, using herbs, spices, medicinal mushrooms and seaweeds.
Rhizome Clinic's online Kitchen Medicine course starts 25th February and there are still a couple of spaces left. We love this course as it can give you useful skills to make medicine from what you can find easily in your kitchen or a nearby grocery shop.
Our passion is teaching people about local wild medicine but that's not that useful if it is winter, or you are on holiday or not near any plants. This course can really broaden your herbal knowledge and skills, making you able to very versatile, particularly in combination with our foundation course. It is an entry level course so no experience needed.
Each week we send you videos and handouts talking about the herbs and therapeutics. Alongside these there is a video demonstrating the weekly practical. These videos are then followed up by a live Q and A the following week to talk through any questions. All details and booking form are on our website: https://www.rhizomeclinic.org.uk/kitchen-medicine.html

Discover the way to make medicines from your food and to make food your medicine. Learn how to look after yourself, friends and family with herbs and spices found in your kitchen cupboard.
We will cover supporting digestion, treating acute viral illnesses and supporting long term immunity, inflammation, balancing blood sugar and using fermented foods. This is a six week course focusing on using and making herbal medicines only from what you might find in your kitchen. For more details about the course and book a place look at the event or our website :https://www.rhizomeclinic.org.uk/kitchen-medicine.html

***STOP PRESS*** We've had a last minute cancellation on our Outdoor Herbal Summer School that starts tonight. Get in touch asap if you're interested in the place.

There are 5 classes from 6.30pm - 9.00pm on Wednesday evenings starting June 23rd and finishing on July 21st.
Cost is £170 full or£150 concession.

This course will use basic botany and intuitive methods that engage our senses to identify and connect with medicinal plants. Each class will be spent outside exploring a community garden and discussing the herbs we find. This is one of our favourite courses as we are outside in these beautiful community gardens around Bristol and are able to show you and harvest the fresh herbs (This year the first two classes are at Grow Wilder in Frenchay).

Each week you will also look at a particular plant family. This will expand your understanding of how plants are organised, enable you to recognise patterns among related plants and their medicinal uses. Learning plant families and their shared botanical and medicinal characteristics is a great way to deepen your herbal knowledge.

You do not need to have been on any previous courses or have any prior herbal knowledge to join us.

Just a reminder for folk in this critical time about our self help Covid page that we compiled last year. It includes information on which herbs to use generally and for specific symptoms, breathing techniques and supplement advice.
https://www.rhizomeclinic.org.uk/self-care-covid-19.html

For anyone who has Covid-19 or knows they may be in the vulnerable/at risk group we are offering shorter focused consultations and will respond with a care package that can be picked up or delivered. If you are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 we will be in daily contact with you and respond to changing circumstances with appropriate herbs. We are collating info from medics and herbalists all over the world to be able to respond as effectively as we can.

NO-ONE who has symptoms of Covid-19 will be turned away due to lack of funds which is why we are asking people to donate money or gift an immune tonic. (see below)
Our support and advice does not contradict the NHS advice to seek medical advice by calling 111 if you believe you are experiencing symptoms of the virus, particularly breathing difficulties.

Donations
We also want to be able to gift herbal packages to vulnerable people, particularly those who have lost jobs or are struggling financially, but also to all those frontline workers in minimum wage jobs working very hard in healthcare/shops/deliveries etc
If you know of anybody who would benefit from this please email us at rhizomeclinic@gmail.com and we will do our best to prioritise the most in need
We can give our time for free but herbs need to be paid for so if you would like to donate some money to help someone access herbs, then you can do so here https://www.paypal.me/rhizomeclinic
