🌀Contact Improvisation Workshop with Jan-Ming Lee
📅 Monday 20th April
🕙6.30-8.30pm
📍BCMB

For students/practitioners of massage or bodywork; or anyone exploring how to safely share body weight through dance.

Contact Improvisation is an evolving community dance practice that emerged during the 1970s in the States. It has no set sequences or steps. It begins with a connection between dancers through exchanging weight, momentum, counterbalance and exploring shared gravity. It teaches a whole body awareness and how to move safely between many choices of direction, effort, releasing, and communicating between dancers through physical proximity.

This workshop will teach elements of Contact Improvisation to build on your skills as a bodyworker, masseuse, or anyone wanting to explore sharing bodyweight dynamically and safely. Jan-Ming will guide you through the stages step by step, offering chances to explore solo movement, and partner movement. Emphasis will be on listening to your own integrity and ways to say yes and no through building trust and empowerment of one’s own boundaries.

Who is it for? If you answer yes to any of the questions below, this workshop is for you!

You are a massage therapist or bodyworker......

Who can sense your client’s resistance to relaxing, but you’re not sure how to work with it?

You feel you work with good technique or a well-practiced sequence or technique but something is missing – your client is still holding back.

To complement your training, you’d like to develop further so you can sense more nuances and more options to respond to each client individually

You’d like to refresh and renew your sense of your practice

You’d like to experience a more dynamic and playful context to explore weight sharing with your whole body awareness

You’d like to explore more equity or fluidity between giving and receiving roles, so that you can be clearer when you are giving or receiving touch

Rocking the body, Rolling the Limbs (RhythmMobility)

This day covers a range of rocking and rolling techniques which complement and enhance the effects of ‘classic’ massage techniques and, when needed, provide you with alternative ways of working effectively with clients - to help them release tensions and to relax, to calm or energise the client, and to rebalance the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

You will receive extensive individual coaching to help you to learn how to find each individual’s ‘natural’ body rhythms (and how to work with these), rather than imposing an arbitrary rhythm (which can be quite jangling and unpleasant for the recipient). So you will learn to tune in more deeply while creating more freedom and release for your clients.

Holistic Diploma weekend 5: Exploring energetics 🌀

This weekend we tuned into sensing the person within - trusting our intuition, switching off our thinking brains and letting go of judgement.

After ramping up the anatomy recently, it was nice to soften, slow down and explore what emerges when we truly listen with our hands.

A lovely weekend weekend of presence and connection ✨

Our next holistic diploma course stars in February, to find out more head to the website!

Weekend 4 for our current holistic massage students ✨

This weekend they had their first taste of anatomy, physiology and pathology (APP) with Tim Bartlett, who teaches on our RSM diploma.
They explored the art of palpation - learning how to find specific muscles, understand where they attach, and feel how they move.

We then discussed why certain muscles might be tight which was a bit of a light bulb moment as we linked massage to the APP theory.

Such an exciting stage of their massage journey, we love seeing the knowledge click into place and skills come alive 🙌
