Hi, Welcome to the Decision Clinic, at the moment I am not actively taking on new projects or clients. However, I will continue to post evidence-based psychology-related information that can support wellbeing and work-life-balance.

Please note, this page will only post information with a psychology evidence-base. I appreciate there may be other alternative approaches to wellbeing, but I have found there are lots of groups for holistic alternative approaches already available, not so many for those interested in knowing the scienced-based techniques and ideas, thus creating this space.

I’m not current practicing therapy, as I’m still lecturing psychology at SGS College, but I saw this list and thought it had some great advice for us all and had to share in case it could help others.

Biology and love

This is the world’s first ever magnetic resonance image showing a mother and child’s bond.
The image is of neuroscientist Rebecca Saxe kissing her two month old son.

The child’s brain appears to be smoother and darker. This is because it has significantly less white matter. White matter is comprised of myelin, which is fatty tissue that acts as insulation for the wires that communicate messages inside your brain.

The activations in the image do not refer to the act of kissing but to the organisation of functional activity in infant brains when viewing meaningful images.

Kissing causes a chemical reaction in your brain, including a burst of the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin is often referred to as the ‘love hormone’ because it stirs up feelings of affection and attachment.

Kissing activates the brain’s reward system; releasing dopamine which makes us feel good. It also releases vasopressin which bonds mothers with babies and romantic partners to each other. It also releases serotonin which helps to regulate our mood.

I changed jobs...and vocations this week. As a leaving gift I wanted to make something for my colleagues, but also something helpful. I know from all my past clients we all forget the small achievements we make and can forget to be grateful for all the positives in our lives. A having a jar to pop in complements, or write down the things that make you smile means you always have a jar of positivity to help in moments of self doubt or stress. I personally find a small bit of sugar can also help when working late, so I popped some of these in as well. I also purchased a couple of extra jars for my boys so we can create sibling kindness jars, to help reinforce all the nice things they do for each other. Do you have a mindfulness or happiness jar?

As my kids grow, I find myself increasingly applying my psychological knowledge in wellbeing and learning to them. Here is some interesting positive psychology research being applied in schools.

University of Melbourne experts in positive psychology are exploring how best to apply the science of wellbeing for school students in key learning environments
