The seasons are a-changing! Whether you dread Autumn and see it as an end to much loved Summer, long hours of daylight, warmth and open windows; or welcome the vivid colours and the chance to start snuggling down for winter, it is always important to look after ourselves a little more when the seasons change. Autumn is the beginning of the yin cycle in Chinese Medicine. This season is associated with the element of Metal – impacting on organization, order, communication, the mind, setting limits, and protecting boundaries - a time of organizing our lives for winter and coming more inside our bodies and mind to reflect on life.

The lungs and large intestine are the organs connected to metal. It’s important to keep warm, sleep well, exercise and eat warm/hot seasonal food. Pungent foods like garlic, onions, ginger, horseradish, and mustard are especially beneficial to the lungs. This is a time to breathe efficiently and take stock, enjoy!

A survey found that adults who eat purple vegetables and blue fruits have reduced risk of high blood pressure; lower cholesterol and less likely to be overweight.
This is due to the phytonutrient which provides the rich purple colour. It mops up free radicals in the system, soothes inflammation, fortifies the immune system and has been shown to improve memory and over all brain function. Aubergine, beetroot, purple broccoli, blackberries, blueberries, plums, figs and blackcurrants are all good for the job - and delicious!

Our bodies are made up of around 60% water, so keeping hydrated has a huge impact on our health and well-being - effecting our digestion, skin, energy, immune system, concentration and memory. Chinese Medicine advocates the consumption of hot or warm water, as it helps preserve and protect the internal organs, and promotes the smooth flow of blood circulation. Try infusing fresh ginger, or adding a squeeze of lemon to your hot water.

It's a little bleak today! Here are some simple ways to improve our feeling of happiness:
1. Listen to music - When you listen to music (especially music that you feel emotionally connected to) studies have found that your brain releases dopamine, which can create a feeling of euphoria.
2. Exercise - The ultimate endorphin booster. When we exercise our brain thinks we are under stress, so releases chemicals and endorphins in order to counter this and any pain it thinks we might be experiencing. As well as blocking any feelings of discomfort, they can also result in a feeling of euphoria!
3. Eat well - ditch the processed food, and anything high in sugar. Walnuts, legumes, foods rich in Omega 3 (e.g. salmon), turmeric, and spinach, all help to lift our mood.
4. Spend time with your friends - Studies have shown that during periods of stress, spending time with your friends can help improve your overall mood.
5. Get enough sleep - Research has shown that failing to get enough sleep dramatically impairs memory and concentration while increasing levels of stress hormones and disrupting the body's normal metabolism. Inversely, more and better quality sleep can make you feel happier.
..And when the weather improves - spend time outside! - Not only the best source of Vitamin D, getting sun is a great mood lifter!

Enjoy!

In Chinese medicine, prevention is better than cure - going to the doctor is a last resort; health is about balance and harmony. By being aware of all aspects of our well-being and focusing on health preservation, we are able to keep many common ailments at bay. Nutrition, sleep, exercise, monitoring stress, and being kind to ourselves and others are all integral parts of keeping healthy.

Balanced body, balanced mind; balanced mind, balanced body.

Spring! A time for movement, change, cleansing, and letting go.
In Chinese Medicine, a lot of the focus is on the liver during Spring. The Liver needs movement, so this is a great time for exercise, for having lovely walks, and doing yoga/Pilates.
This is the perfect moment to create order in your life, and get rid of any chaos, creating space for new opportunities.
Spring is the best season for a de-tox - flushing out the toxins will help the liver to do its job more effectively. Begin by eliminating foods that stress the liver, such as fried or fatty foods, sugar and white flour, and foods with chemical preservatives and food colouring. Eat mindfully, and appreciate every mouthful.
Resentment is indigestible and has a negative effect on the liver. Let go and start afresh.
Take a risk, and start something new, you will be surprised how amazing this makes you feel!
And lastly, keep hydrated. Drink lots of (ideally hot) water, adding lemon to nourish the Liver.

In Chinese medicine, the energy (Chi) flows through the body and passes through the organs. This has an impact on our balance, harmony and general health of the body. When energy is not flowing efficiently in the body, it generates blocks - this effects our minds, the way we think and see life. By keeping our bodies balanced, we vastly improve our mental well-being.
