Tonight felt special.
My first South Pacific Dance gathering back after maternity leave… with my mum dancing beside me.
Before movement was exercise, it was expression.
Before practice, it was culture.
South Pacific dance has always lived quietly in my bones — a rhythm passed through generations, through stories, through the women who came before me.
Growing up here, far from my ancestral islands, there were times when that part of my identity felt distant, even isolating. But moments like this remind me how powerful it is to reclaim and share those roots.
Standing in a room full of women — familiar faces and new ones — moving together in rhythm, wearing our sarongs, laughing and learning side by side… it felt like something deeper than just a dance class.
It felt like remembrance.
In places where cultural diversity can sometimes feel limited, I believe sharing indigenous traditions in this way matters. Not just as performance or practice, but as a celebration of culture, joy, and connection.
A way of bringing people together through movement, storytelling, and sisterhood.
Having my mum there beside me will always mean so much — a reminder of the pride I carry for her culture, and the honour it is to share even a small part of it with this community.
My heart is full tonight. 🌺
