Neal’s Story
Hi, my name is Neal Price. I live in Thanet with my lovely wife Fleur and two beautiful daughters, Victoria and Eleanor.
I was the proprietor of Harvest Health Foods, a health food shop in Ramsgate, which I opened in 1978 and retired from in 2024. Some 46 years.
I was very much involved in outdoor activities and was a keen cyclist, walker, climber and skier. I also enjoyed camping, particularly in Wales. I am a follower of Welsh rugby and would often travel to Wales to see regional and international games so I was fit, healthy and highly motivated.
In 2017 life changed for me in the blink of an eye! I experienced a catastrophic cycling accident which resulted in life changing injuries due to spinal cord damage. My injury is at T3 level, thorasic vertebrae 3 below which I am paralysed. I have no use of my legs, tummy and core muscles.
After a three and a half month stay in St George’s Hospital and Stanmore Hospital I returned to the real world and with the help of Neuro-Kinex Physiotherapy in Crawley, alternative practitioners of Tai Chi, acupuncture, homeopathy and of course yoga with Alan Bain, I am stronger, fitter and have a high level of independence.
For transportation I depend upon my wheel chair and my adapted car. I physically transfer from my wheelchair into the car seat. I then lean out and dismantle the wheelchair and bit by bit place it on the front passenger side beside me and then off I go. The light weight replacement chair will speed up the transference, especially beneficial when it is cold, windy and raining. I enjoy “pushing” in my wheelchair, particularly at Pegwell Country Park where I push considerable distances. Pushing is the equivalent to cycling but with my arms, not my legs. I have had my current wheelchair now for five years. It is a heavy chair, the frame alone weighing 14Kg. I am looking to get a new chair which is a Quickie Krypton made of carbon fibre with a frame weight of just 5Kg. this would be so much easier to get into the car and also to “push”.
All of the advanced technology that goes into producing a lightweight chair such as this comes at a cost of course. The new chair costs £6,000
Your financial support will improve my physical and mental ability to train and live a more fulfilling life.
Thank You.
Neal
