The role of health and fitness professionals should be to make exercise inclusive to all.

People will have opinions about the “best exercise” for this, or that there is “bad exercises” for that . Which to some degree is right.

However, in our opinion, we’re missing the bigger picture.

We’re stepping over pounds to pick up pennies.

Latest figures show that 36.9% of the UK population do not meet activity guidelines.

63.8% of adults are classified as obese or overweight.

Exercise is singularly one of the best preventative medicine against all health condition. Mentally, physically and socially.

We need to do better. Encouraging people to do more and just do something. Whether that be outside, in gyms or at home.

If you, or someone you know need some guidance, send us a message and we’d love to be part of supporting your journey.

Stiff upper back? Struggle overhead?

In most people, thoracic mobility is an area to be addressed.

Whether this is trying to counter the long hours sat at a desk, working to improve your overhead mobility, or a factor contributing to your shoulder pain.

Try this little routine as part of your week or before your next session.

Perform 5-8 repetition of each, repeat 1-2 rounds.

Let us know how you get on in the comments ⬇️

Whilst recently listening to Simon Jeffries .natural.edge on the speaking on mindset, he talked about the concept of “the moving average” - “That you do not need perfection to make progress, all you need is consistency. Everyone has bad days.”

This is an idea that resonated with me both personally from a mindset perspective, and professionally as a physio with my approach to rehab and behaviour change.

Within physio, for most, rehab is boring and arduous. Behaviour change is difficult, it’s a process.

For both, people think you have to be 100% all in and stick exactly to the plan. This is not the case.

“The moving average” is accepting that success is not linear. Taking away an all or nothing approach and looking at the overall trajectory.

Life gets in the way, but try doing something that edges your moving average into the positive.

No time for a 45-60 minute exercise class, could you do 10-15 minute walk?

Or in rehab having “small wins”. One easy thing that moves you in the right direction towards the goal.

Leave your ego at the door

We’re talking about this from both a personal and profession perspective. (As well as a reminder for ourselves)

When injured , it can be hard to regress and pull back from things.

The feeling you are being left behind from others and missing out.

You're going to lose your ability, strength, fitness, performance.

Leave the ego.

Consistency is king.

Injury is inevitable in sport, training, activity and life.

It’s frustrating and has a huge psychological impact.

But pushing through can delay recovery and hinder long term goals/performance.

There will be times to push, but also hold back.

Play the long game. Think the bigger picture.

One step back to take two step forwards as part of the process.

Are you in this situation and need help. Get in touch and we can give you the advice and support.

Rehab is a long-term journey, not a one stop quick fix.

Pain to performance

Client highlight - Andy Coles

👏🏼 Huge congratulations to Andy for a podium finish over the weekend at the Southwest Regional Finals CrossFit competition.

When Andy first come to see us two months ago, he was unsure he would even make the competition floor. He had been struggling with an ongoing shoulder problem for two years.

He was unable to train regularly, constantly flaring up pain in his left shoulder.

Had been told numerous things by other therapist and healthcare professionals.

Had no plan. With a reactive approach to his problem and pain.

No confidence in his physical ability.

Understandably anxious regarding his pain and affects it was taking on him mentally. Stopping doing the thing he enjoyed.

🥈Now, after two months. He didn’t just make the competition floor. He finished on the podium with a second place finish

That’s just the icing on top of the cake.

He’s also back training regularly.

Has a proactive approach to management.

Confident in his ability and found his enjoyment for training.

Has an understanding how to continue his management and progress his performance.

How did he get there❓

He had a plan with a new level of understanding.

He knew the why. To his problem and the rehab process.

We built foundations. Progressed and reassessed.

This is huge example of our purpose for everyone. Educate. Empower. Excel.

Massive credit to Andy. Sticking to the process and being incredibly consistent week on week.

Well deserved break before we see him to continue to build on this.
