ACUPUNCTURE FOR PREGNANCY
Acupuncture has a great reputation as an alternative therapy for those hoping to conceive and Claire Dabreo has garnered quite a reputation for working in this field, being regularly included in ‘best practitioner lists’. We asked her to tell us more about what she offers and how it can help.
“I’ve worked with hundreds of couples and women who are hoping to start - or grow - their family and, as a practitioner, I have made it my business to understand the kinds of problems people might encounter, the best ways to address these issues and how to offer the best advice and treatment I can. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach in acupuncture and this is especially true for fertility.
The most common issues I tend to see in my clinic are irregular menstrual cycles, hormonal issues like PCOS, recurrent miscarriage, or simply not falling pregnant despite trying for months, but I also see people who think they might like to start trying soon and they want to make sure they are doing what they can to support a healthy pregnancy.
I meet with both partners if I can in order to get the fullest picture possible and from there everything I suggest is tailored to the individual. We take a look at everything, including diet, lifestyle, stress, sleep, and identify if there are any underlying issues that might be getting in the way of conception.
There’s a lot of testing available now to help couples understand their fertility picture so I can identify if any of these might be useful to have and if so, how to access them.
With regards to the acupuncture itself, we may focus on regulating hormones, improving energy, reducing the effects of stress, improving blood flow or supporting general wellbeing, depending on what is needed to create the best conditions possible for conception.
Trying to conceive should be fun, but for many people it becomes overwhelming and isolating, so having a space in my clinic to offload and know that you are being proactive in working towards conception can be really beneficial mentally and emotionally.
