“Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views he takes of them.”
This famous quote by the Stoic philosopher, Epictetus, had a profound influence on one of the founders of CBT, Albert Ellis. He contended that we can choose how we view the events in our lives, and that the choices we make will determine whether or not we become disturbed by them.
When challenging or difficult events crop up in our lives, it’s easy to get caught up and seduced by the thoughts related to them, holding them to be sacrosanct and tangible, when in actuality, they’re just thoughts and anything but real. Challenging those thoughts with rational logic will often lay bear the truth, that they are just bad friends, leading us astray. Just changing how we view events in our lives can have a powerful effect on how we respond, and in turn, how we feel.
