Westmeria Counselling Services

Westmeria Counselling Services We were established in 2003 to help people in crisis, or just in need of support, with an emphasis on depression.

There are times when we all need a little help…. We are primarily a voluntary organisation, serving the local community. We were established in 2003 to help people in crisis, or just in need of support, with a particular emphasis on those suffering from depression. It is our aim to reverse the trend of reliance on anti-depressants. Our professional, qualified counsellors offer counselling on a don

ation basis, helping to make such a vital service both affordable and accessible. Each session lasts for 50 minutes and there is an upper limit of 24 sessions. We also offer mental health support in the work-place, by offering workshops and employee counselling to companies.

You keep telling yourself things will settle down soon.

That next week will feel easier.

That once things calm down, you’ll feel better.

But stress doesn’t always wait. And it doesn’t always pass on its own.

Sometimes, the shift comes when you take action - even in small ways.

You don’t need a perfect plan, you just need a starting point.

Because taking action, however small, is often the first step out of feeling stuck. 💛

April is Stress Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how stress affects our lives and what we can do to support our mental wellbeing.

The truth is, resilience isn’t built through big, dramatic changes. Often, it’s the small daily habits that make the biggest difference. Taking a moment to pause, getting outside, talking to someone you trust, and protecting your rest can all help your mind cope better with pressure over time.

If stress has been building lately, start small. One gentle step today can help support your wellbeing tomorrow.

So many of us carry thoughts around in our heads until they start looping. Especially when we’re stressed, anxious, or trying to make sense of something painful.

Then we sit down, write a few honest lines… and something shifts.

Not because everything is “fixed”, but because it’s finally out.

Research into expressive writing shows that putting thoughts and feelings into words can help us process difficult experiences, reduce emotional intensity, and gain clarity.

Writing creates structure around what feels chaotic and can gently move us from overwhelm to understanding.

If you want to try it, here’s a simple way to begin:

🕰️ Set a timer for 10–15 minutes
🤍 Write freely about what’s really on your mind
🌊 Don’t worry about grammar or neatness
🌱 End with one small sentence of kindness to yourself

A letter you never send still has power. And if the page isn’t enough, we’re here to help you put words to what you’re carrying.

Today is the first day of spring and honestly, after months of dark mornings, grey skies and long evenings, it’s no surprise if your mind has felt a little heavier than usual.

Spring doesn’t fix everything overnight, but it can be a gentle reminder that brighter days are returning and so can we.

One of the simplest things we can do for our mental wellbeing is also one of the most accessible: step outside.

Even ten minutes of daylight, fresh air, and movement can help calm anxious thoughts, lift your mood, and give your mind a break from everything feeling “too much”.

Small steps count, and when you can, step outside even for a few minutes or short walk.

Happy first day of spring 💛

Men’s mental health isn’t a “maybe” issue and the numbers show it clearly.

Behind every statistic is someone’s friend, brother, partner, father, or son.

Awareness matters. But action matters more.

Check in. Ask twice. Listen without judgment.

Because support can change everything.

Today we’re celebrating the story behind Westmeria Counselling and the woman who turned personal experience into purpose.

For Sue, our founder and CEO, the journey began with a deeply personal experience… she simply wanted to ‘pay it forward.’

Over 20 years later, that quiet determination has grown into a charity supporting thousands of people in our community with accessible, affordable counselling.

We’re so proud of the difference that compassion, community and shared responsibility can make not just for individuals, but for families and future generations too.

We’re incredibly proud to have been featured in The Non-League Paper Francis Duku recent column highlighting mental health in football.

As Francis shared, we're honoured to support around 250 clients each week - yet only 20% of those are men

Together, we’re working to change that.

Mental health is not a weakness, it’s part of our whole wellbeing and no one should have to suffer in silence.

A huge thank you to Francis for helping raise awareness of the importance of accessible, affordable mental health support - especially for men in sport and beyond.

If you need support, we’re here. 💙

💜 Emotional Health Day 💜 Today felt like an important reminder. 💜

A reminder that emotional health isn’t something we should only think about when we’re at breaking point.

It matters every day, in the small moments, in the quiet struggles, and in the times we tell ourselves we’re “fine” when we’re really not.

Because the truth is… so many people are carrying more than we realise.

📌 1 in 4 adults experiences mental health issues
📌 1 in 5 adults has a common mental disorder
📌 20% of people feel anxious most or all of the time
📌 6 in 100 are diagnosed with anxiety every week
📌 Young people’s mental health conditions have doubled since the pandemic

These aren’t just statistics - they’re real people. Friends. Family. Workmates. Neighbours.

So today, we’re sharing a gentle reminder:

✨ Rest is strength, not weakness.
✨ Wellbeing matters just as much.
✨ Your emotions are valid, always.

If you’re struggling, please don’t suffer in silence. Reach out. Talk to someone. You deserve support 💜

Two little words can carry so much: thank you. 💛

Hearing or feeling gratitude can be incredibly powerful - it can remind you that you're seen, that your efforts matter, and that even small steps forward are noticed.

A simple thank you can give encouragement, comfort and a quiet sense of hope - a reminder that you're not alone on your journey.

Sometimes, these two words are more than polite… they’re a lifeline. 💌✨
