Cardiovascular disease, covering conditions like coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and more, is responsible for around one in four deaths in the UK. Itโs a leading cause of both illness and premature death.
Shockingly, CVD is often under-recognised in women, despite affecting them just as much as men. Misconceptions like "heart disease is a man's condition" delay diagnosis and treatment, leading to avoidable harm.
But the good news? Most cases are preventable. Up to 80% of premature CVD deaths can be avoided through simple, everyday health actions.
Hereโs what you can do now:
- Know your numbers. Regularly check blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, especially if you have risk factors or a family history.
- Eat well. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein supports heart health.
- Move more. At least 30 minutes of moderate activity, like brisk walking or cycling, these can improve your heartโs strength.
- Donโt smoke, and limit alcohol. These are major drivers of heart disease.
- Get help for stress or sleep issues. Both can impact heart health significantly.
Prioritising your heart is crucial, for women and men alike. Small changes today can lead to years of stronger, healthier tomorrows.
