I’m sure you’ve all heard of the hype with regards to Retinols/Retinals and Vitamin A in your skincare but do you really understand what it’s all about and did you even know the difference between a Retinol and a Retinal??

So here’s a brief little lesson in retinoids……….

Retinoids, is a molecule derived from vitamin A. It has become over recent years a potent ingredient used within skincare and is used to address skin concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, blemishes, enlarged pores and other skin concerns by promoting skin cell turnover, and collagen production.

There are basically 3 types of retinoids

RetinOl widely available over-the-counter and requires two conversion steps to become retinoic acid within the skin

RetinAl also known as retinaldehyde and requires only one conversion step to become retinoic acid. Considered more effective and faster acting than retinol but still gentle enough.

Retinoic Acid the most potent form, also known as Tretinoin available on prescription only. Tretinoin has been around since the 1970’s and was originally used as a topical treatment for acne. It does not require conversion but can be more irritating to the skin.
