Pilates
Taught By Lucy Scott
Pilates is essentially a mind body centering technique that emphasises the importance of beginning movement from a central core of stability. From this central core, the Pilates method woks by adjusting the intensity of each exercise through the use of differing limb movements and resistance (using pilates equipment). Lucy previously worked in the NHS for 13 years as a

n Occupational Therapist, many of those years as a Macmillan Occupational Therapist. She then retrained as a Pilates instructor with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute. Lucy's previous career has given her a good understanding of the human body, and mind. Through her previous career Lucy developed excellent skills in observation which she now applies in her Pilates teaching to ensure all my clients are getting the most from the classes.

Earlier this week I had a lovely lady back for her second 1:1 Pilates session.

She told me she’d been hoping to get back to Pilates for the last 5 years, but life had simply got in the way. I think so many of us can relate to that.

Between sessions she had only managed to practise one small thing we worked on — but even that made a difference. She could feel herself using her core muscles more effectively and already felt more confident with the exercises.

She’ll probably have one or two more individual sessions before joining a class, which is such a lovely way to build confidence and learn the basics in a way that works for her.

That’s the thing with Pilates — there’s no “one size fits all”. Some people come for one beginner 1:1 session, others come for six. Everyone starts in a different place, and that’s absolutely fine.

Getting the foundations right really can make all the difference. ✨

I had a lovely 1:1 session this week with a beginner client who came to me feeling a long-standing weakness through her core following the birth of her second child… 17 years ago.

She’s naturally slim and has never felt drawn to the gym, but had noticed that her tummy still “domes” when she tries to sit up — something that can be a sign the deeper core muscles aren’t quite doing their job.

She found me on Instagram and felt a gentle, supportive introduction to Pilates would suit her best — and she was absolutely right 🤍

We focused on:
✨ Gentle activation of the deep abdominal muscles
✨ Connecting with the pelvic floor
✨ Learning how to move without that doming effect

By starting slowly and building the right foundations, we can begin to strengthen her core safely and effectively.

She’s gone away with 4 simple movements to practise at home, and I’m really looking forward to seeing her again in a couple of weeks to build on this 💛

This is exactly why I love what I do — helping women feel more connected, confident, and supported in their bodies, no matter how long it’s been.

If this sounds familiar to you, you’re not alone… and it’s never too late to start 🌿

Working on an inner thigh Pilates workout for my online members. This is not to get the “thigh gap” hate to break it to you but you either have one or you don’t. However, they are important for joint support. Strong inner thighs can help take pressure off the knees and hips, which is especially helpful if you experience aches or stiffness in those areas. For many people, these muscles are often underused, so giving them a bit of attention can make a noticeable difference.

Another lovely beginner 1:1 Pilates session last week 💫

This client, a retired physiotherapist, had been gifted a session for Christmas – such a thoughtful present. She’s been recovering from a psoas muscle injury, so we kept everything gentle and carefully tailored to support her healing without aggravating anything.

She’d never tried Pilates before, but really enjoyed the session and left feeling good in her body – which is always the goal ✨

Afterwards, as I do with all first-time clients, she received a short follow-up video covering the basic exercises we worked on, so she can practise at home if she’d like. I also shared details on how to book further sessions and information about my classes.

If you’re new to Pilates, recovering from injury, or just want something that feels supportive and personal, this is exactly what 1:1 sessions are for 💛

This week in one of my 1:1 Pilates sessions, I spent time with a lovely client who’s been part of my classes for a couple of years. Recently, she had a fall and broke her wrist, so getting back into movement has needed a gentle, thoughtful approach.

Because she also lives with a long-standing back condition (spondylolisthesis), returning straight into a class didn’t feel quite right for her just yet. Instead, we’re using a few individual sessions to rebuild confidence, strength, and ease in her body before she rejoins the group.

She’s previously considered surgery due to the level of pain she experiences, but for now has chosen to manage things with movement and medication. Pilates isn’t a cure — but it can be a powerful way to support the body, improve stability, and help make day-to-day life feel more manageable.

This is exactly where 1:1 sessions can be so valuable — creating space to work at your pace, around your body, and with what you need right now 💛

If you’re not quite ready for a class, or you’re returning after injury or managing a condition, you’re very welcome to start here.

A lovely reminder today that Pilates really can meet you where you are. 💛

I had the pleasure of working with a lady in her 60s who has recently been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. With fatigue affecting her energy levels, she’d found herself moving less and worrying about losing strength. Her consultant had recommended Pilates, and we kept today’s session gentle, supportive and paced around what felt right for her.

She left feeling positive and enjoyed the session, which was wonderful to see. We’ll do a few more individual sessions to help build confidence and strength before she joins a class.

And perhaps the best part… she’s a fellow dog lover and has requested that Dog Esmay joins us next time. Esmay is more than happy to oblige as assistant instructor 🐾

Pilates isn’t about pushing through — it’s about finding ways to move that support your body, your energy and your wellbeing.

If fatigue, health changes or loss of confidence have made movement feel daunting, gentle Pilates can be a lovely place to begin. ✨

Individual Pilates session ✨
This week I’ve been working with Mrs Mc, a wonderful lady in her late 70s who has been coming to Pilates for a few years.

She often says she was never a fan of exercise and only started later in life with the attitude of “move it or lose it” — and I love that honesty. 😊

With a previous hip replacement, back pain and an arthritic knee, her sessions are always adapted to support what her body needs. At the start of this week’s session, I checked in with her because she’d seemed very tired at the end of our last one. That check-in is an important part of how I work. She reassured me she felt fine and said she’d let me know if anything felt too much.

That kind of communication and trust matters.

Because of her knee, we use a small set of steps to help her lean on and get on and off the floor safely (see pic) — a simple adaptation that makes all the difference.

This is something I love about Pilates: it isn’t about forcing bodies into exercise, it’s about meeting people where they are, working with the body they have today, and helping them keep moving with confidence.

A first individual Pilates session from last week

A lovely woman in her early 50s who has been wanting to return to Pilates for five years — but between work and raising three children, life kept getting in the way. Sound familiar?

Now she’s found a small window of time to do something for herself. 💛

She came to Pilates because perimenopause has left her feeling less strong, her body has changed, and she wants to feel more like herself again. I hear this from so many women.

In our session we explored core connection, and while activating those deep muscles came quite naturally, maintaining that connection through movement was more challenging — as was tuning into what was actually happening in her body.

This is something I see often with women at this stage of life. We can become so used to living in our heads, caring for everyone else and pushing through, that reconnecting with our own bodies takes practice.

She really enjoyed the session and is coming back for another one-to-one before joining a class. And because life is busy, her “homework” is simple and realistic — one exercise and one stretch. That feels sustainable, and sustainable is what works.

Pilates doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Sometimes it starts with a small pocket of time and one step back to yourself. ✨

Individual Pilates session ✨

Last week one of my sessions was with Mr P, a gentleman in his mid 50s who has been coming for individual Pilates sessions for a couple of years. He originally started Pilates to support his golf — improving core strength, spinal mobility and flexibility through the hips. ⛳

Now 6 weeks post hernia repair, we focused on gently getting back into movement, reconnecting with his core and easing some stiffness he’d been noticing in his back and hips after doing less Pilates recently.

It’s always rewarding to support clients through different stages — from performance goals to recovery and getting back to feeling comfortable in their bodies again.

And next week, his partner is coming along for an individual session too so they can do Pilates together — such a brilliant idea and a lovely way to support each other. 💛

Pilates really is for life — helping you move well for the things you love.
