This interview is about SO much more than aging and longevity (and probably not about the mindfulness you know); it is a useful life lesson for EVERYONE, including those with chronic pain and other health issues which interfere with daily living. I found Ellen Langer to be really inspirational. I hope you make time to listen and enjoy it as much, and find something useful.

In today’s episode, Jonathan is joined by Prof. Ellen Langer to explore whether the power of your thoughts can combat aging.

TENSION HEADACHE RELIEF
These are my two, go-to sequences for relieving tension headaches.

Bob and Brad are great for showing you self-help exercises for all sorts of muscle and joint pains - check them out.

The NBC article is a shorter sequence, again for the neck, which in turn will help a tension headache - to be done slowly, not at the repeat speed of the videos. I like to do both!

A stand-alone or add-on exercise (NOT to be done if you are pregnant) is to use your right thumb to press into the thick part of the webbing between your thumb and index finger of your left hand. This point is known to reduce pain from tension headaches and for general pain. Hold for 10 to 15 seconds. Repeat 10 times. You can also keep your right thumb in the same place on your skin, but slowly move the soft tissue around for a mini massage - whatever feels best.

As with all exercises, do not do them if it causes you pain. A bit of ‘grateful’ ache is fine, but no more. And if symptoms persist, consult a doctor.

Happy New Year! I hope this finds you well.

Here is a lighter, self-massage video I like.

Moisturiser could be used instead of oil.

Personally, I’ll try memorising the moves and doing them while watching TV. 🙂

Dr. Schubiner's "5 F's" to avoid: FOCUSING on the pain, FIGHTING against the pain, FEARING the pain, trying to FIX the pain, and getting FRUSTRATED.

These are all natural responses to the presence of ongoing pain. Even so, NOT EVERY RESPONSE THAT IS NATURAL IS HELPFUL.

When you notice that you're focusing, shift.
When you notice that you're fighting, surrender.
When you notice that you're fixing, let it be.
When you notice that you're fearing, cultivate safety.
When you notice that you're frustrated, let go of your expectations.

Pain is natural and normal. It will crop up throughout your life, even after you recover from chronic symptoms. The goal of recovery is not to live a life without pain, but to live a life with more power. Recovery should not be measured by how much pain is present, but by how you choose to greet it when it shows up.

What are your favorite ways to shift out of the 5 F's? Share your tricks below!

As someone who would normally be working, hands on, with the fascia, this self-help course caught my eye, as potentially beneficial for any of you wanting to shift stiffness, stuck places, aches and pains. I think I'll be giving it a go. It's not expensive. Don't let the pose put you off! One of the important things about fascia work is knowing that a limit to movement, and pain, can often be relieved by work to the fascia in a part of the body remote from the stuck place. I'm guessing this course will work with the whole body. If you try it, let me know how you get on.

Fascia stretching is often credited as the most effective bodywork anyone can do, as it enables the development of deep foundational strength,...

Feeling the cold or anxious? Remember, as the weather has turned colder, to wrap up warmly and, every so often, open up your chest and arms and lower your shoulders - hunching in, due to the cold (or stress), not only brings tension into your body, but it affects the chemical balance in your blood, which in turn, can bring on anxiety.

And take time to check your breathing, notice it - are you breathing from your tummy or has the breath got stuck into your chest, become shallow or rapid? Aim to slow it down, particularly the outbreath and think about it starting from your tummy and expanding your ribs sideways and into your back, before your chest expands, but without raising your shoulders. Go slowly with this. If it's too much or you start to feel light-headed at all, just return to a natural breath and think just about your tummy breathing to start with.

Be kind to yourself, as you would a friend.

Sending you the image of warm sunshine and cosy fires at this time of the year.
