Brain Working Recursive Therapy – or BWRT, as it’s usually known – uses a totally different process to traditional psychological therapies…. and it’s RAPID and highly effective. It works directly with the part of the brain that stores all sorts of patterns of behaviour; psychological responses that fire up automatically in response to a trigger.
We’ve all learned how to do thing automatically….. like writing, driving, swimming or tying your shoelaces. Once the brain has learned how to do it, it’s stored in the part of the brain that doesn’t think, and doesn’t have conscious awareness. So they’re often referred to as subconscious patterns. And these subconscious patterns help us to function normally in every day life. Imagine how exhausting it would be if you had to consciously think about and remember how to do these things every time!
Most of the time this works really well, but sometimes, because of something you learned in the past, these learned subconscious patterns get you feeling, thinking and responding in unhelpful ways….like anxiety or anger. Especially when there’s fear involved, since that part of the brain is intent upon your survival. And here’s the thing…. once that pattern is taken on board it must be activated whenever the trigger is present. For example: if as a young child you saw your mum, or a sibling, screaming at the sight of a spider, that part of the brain learns that spiders are a threat to survival. It makes no difference whether or not you remember the event, or even if you logically understand that most spiders can’t hurt us – the survival part of the brain doesn’t ‘do’ logic – the pattern that fires up is that spiders are a threat to survival and you must escape!
It’s exactly the same with any trigger for anxiety, any phobic response, stress or any other unwanted psychological process – you might know the root cause or you might not – but something has programmed that response pattern deep within your brain.
With BWRT there’s no need to find out the root cause – you probably don’t remember and we don’t need to go digging around to find out.
