ACUPUNCTURE for ADHD
Acupuncture may help with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) by influencing the body’s nervous system and promoting balance in areas commonly associated with ADHD symptoms—such as attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity. While it’s not a cure, research and clinical experience suggest several potential benefits:
🧠Regulation of Neurotransmitters
Acupuncture may help modulate brain chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine, which play a key role in attention and behavior. This can support improved focus and mood regulation.
🧠Calming the Nervous System
ADHD is often linked to sympathetic nervous system overactivity (the “fight or flight” response). Acupuncture can stimulate the parasympathetic system (the “rest and digest” mode), which promotes calmness and focus.
🧠Improved Sleep
Many with ADHD struggle with sleep, which worsens symptoms. Acupuncture can help regulate sleep cycles and reduce anxiety-related insomnia.
🧠Reduction in Anxiety and Irritability
ADHD often co-occurs with anxiety. Acupuncture can help reduce stress, irritability, and emotional reactivity by affecting the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
🧠Enhanced Executive Function
By improving blood flow and neural activity in the prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and impulse control), acupuncture may support better cognitive function.
Clinical Evidence:
Studies are still limited and vary in quality, but small trials and reviews suggest that acupuncture may be beneficial as a complementary treatment, especially for children who are sensitive to medications or adults seeking non-pharmaceutical support.
