We started our Easter with some gardening as our residents spent the afternoon planting seeds. These little sprouts will be nurtured indoors until May, when they will be ready to move outside into our pots and garden beds, weather permitting. Beyond the joy of getting our hands in the soil, gardening offers wonderful therapeutic benefits for everyone living with us.

The More...Sensory experience of touching the earth and smelling the fresh compost provides immediate stress relief and a sense of calm. Engaging in light planting is also a fantastic way for residents to stay active and maintain their motor skills. Perhaps most importantly, the process of caring for a tiny seed as it grows into a plant gives us all a meaningful sense of purpose and a beautiful lesson in patience. Watching these seeds transform into something vibrant brings so much life to our home.

We were so lucky to have a special Easter visit from the wonderful Jenny and Ruby from Pets as Therapy! Ruby looked absolutely adorable in her best festive outfit, bringing so many smiles to our residents' faces. Beyond the cuteness, these visits offer incredible benefits - boosting emotional wellbeing, reducing feelings of loneliness, and even helping to lower stress levels. There’s nothing quite like the unconditional love of a therapy dog to brighten everyone's day and spark wonderful memories.

Thank you, Jenny and Ruby, for hopping by and making our Easter celebrations so much more meaningful! 🐾🐰🌷

Another successful evening for our monthly Gents Club! This is held on the first Thursday of each month and if you are a Gent or would like to attend with your Gent, we would be delighted to see you for a 'Pie and a Pint'. Please let us know you would like to attend 🙂

A gents' club in a care home provides tailored social engagement, boosting mental wellbeing and reducing loneliness for male residents by offering a, purposeful, and familiar environment. These clubs often enhance cognitive function through reminiscence, improve mood by fostering camaraderie, and provide a sense of identity.

We are absolutely "quacking" with excitement here at Lace Hill Manor! 🦆✨

We recently welcomed duck eggs into our home to observe the incubation and hatching process, and it has brought so much joy to our community! Witnessing new life emerge offers those living with us a wonderful sense of awe and purpose, serving as a powerful form of More...Sensory and animal therapy that sparks great conversations and memories.

Come and see us and meet our new fluff balls! They will be with us until next Friday!

We played the 'catching sticks' game over the weekend and its becoming a firm favourite!

This is a high-energy activity where you attempt to grab sticks as they fall randomly from a motorised or hand-held bar, and it provides significant physical and cognitive benefits. Physically, the game is an excellent tool for improving reflexes and reaction speed, which are critical for maintaining balance and potentially reducing fall risks. It also enhances hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills through the precise, quick movements required to grasp the sticks. Cognitively, the random dropping pattern demands high levels of focus, concentration, and mental alertness, effectively 'training the brain' while keeping people engaged.

Beyond these functional gains, the game serves as a vibrant social catalyst; it often brings plenty of laughs and a sense of achievement, which helps combat loneliness and boosts the overall emotional wellbeing of the residents.

Our lovely Ladies’ Club had a fantastic evening this month, voting for a delicious Chinese feast followed by a classic screening of Fawlty Towers in our cinema room!

These monthly meet-ups are so much more than just a treat; they give our residents the independence to choose their own themes and activities, ensuring everyone has a voice. Coming together like this is a wonderful way to boost social connection, spark plenty of laughter, and create a real sense of community and belonging within our home.

We were absolutely delighted to welcome Philip Heyman, a talented viola player into our home this week for a beautiful live performance!

It was wonderful to see our residents so engaged; the rich, mellow tones of the viola created such a calm and therapeutic atmosphere throughout the bistro. Live music like this is so much more than just entertainment - it helps stimulate memory, reduces anxiety, and brings everyone together for a shared sensory experience.

A huge thank you for bringing such joy and musical inspiration to our morning!

Last week we welcomed the children from Lace Hill Academy, performing their poems for us.

Intergenerational poetry recitals create a powerful bridge between young and old, offering emotional and cognitive benefits for both groups.

For school children, performing in an aged-care setting builds confidence, improves public speaking skills, and fosters a sense of empathy as they engage with a different generation. For the residents, hearing familiar verses can stimulate memory recall, reduce feelings of isolation, and provide a joyful sense of social connection.

These visits transform a simple school assignment into a meaningful community act, proving that the rhythm and beauty of language can spark genuine human connection across any age gap.

Yesterday was a truly magical St Patrick's Day celebration at the home, filled with Irish cheer and vibrant festivities! The atmosphere was alive with joy, particularly for our lovely Galway Girl, Claire, who had a wonderful time celebrating her heritage. She was beaming as she sang along with Tommy and his lively tunes, making it a memorable day for everyone involved.

Celebrating these events does wonders for the wellbeing of those living with us by boosting social connection and reducing feelings of isolation. For someone like Claire, singing along to familiar tunes provides excellent cognitive stimulation and "reminiscence therapy," as music often unlocks happy memories and helps maintain a sense of identity. Beyond the mental health boost, the laughter and "toe-tapping" encourage light physical movement and create a vibrant, joyful atmosphere that improves the overall quality of life within the home.
