This Christmas, Green Planet Forest School are proud to support the charity Caring Matters Now by purchasing copies of their new children’s book, Didi, the Wolf and the Starry Tattoos, and gifting one to every school we work with.

The story follows Didi, a young girl born with Congenital Melanocytic Naevus (CMN) — a rare dark brown birthmark that can cover up to 80% of the skin — and explores courage, belonging and embracing our differences.

Like Caring Matters Now, at Green Planet we also believe that uniqueness is our superpower and we encourage children to celebrate uniqueness in nature and in one another. By sharing this book with our partner schools, we hope to inspire conversations about kindness, inclusion and visible differences.

Caring Matters Now is the only UK charity supporting people affected by CMN, and funds raised from book sales help them to support families, raise awareness and drive pioneering research.

In Sweden, school lunchrooms are being transformed into calming, forest-like spaces—where the noise of clattering trays and chatter fades beneath acoustic wood ceilings and the gentle presence of indoor trees. These design upgrades are part of a nationwide initiative to improve student well-being through natural architecture. Instead of sterile cafeterias, children now eat beneath slatted timber panels that absorb echo and distribute sound evenly, lowering overall noise levels and stress.

Towering planters hold real or semi-hydroponic trees—birch, olive, or small-leaved fig—bringing the visual texture and scent of the outdoors into the school day. Soft pendant lights, shaped like stones or leaves, hang low between branches. The air feels cooler, the ambiance gentler, and mealtimes become less chaotic and more communal. Some schools even add low benches and picnic-style tables to complete the experience.

Teachers report fewer behavioral disruptions during lunch and smoother transitions back to class. Students describe the canteens as “relaxing like a park,” and in colder months, the greenery offers a welcome sense of life and continuity. The combination of sensory comfort and biophilic design reflects Sweden’s growing belief that learning doesn’t only happen in classrooms—it thrives wherever young minds feel calm and connected.

This school dining shift isn’t just aesthetic—it’s emotional architecture in action.

In Sweden, many children attend “forest preschools” — open-air classrooms where learning happens in nature. Lessons unfold beneath trees and beside streams instead of inside four walls.

Children explore their surroundings daily, learning science through observation, teamwork through play, and resilience by being active in all weather.

Teachers trained in outdoor methods use simple shelters, whiteboards, and weatherproof gear to support learning year-round.

Studies show these children have stronger immune systems, better focus, less stress, and a deeper understanding of ecology and sustainability.

Sweden’s forest preschools reflect a national belief that childhood should grow from freedom, curiosity, and respect for nature.

Emotional and mental wellbeing is a constant in our delivery at Forest School. We discuss our feelings and our emotions, and we talk about mental health and the importance of maintaining it. Today at our afterschool club at Buckingham Primary School we lit a fire and had a ceremony of sorts. We each wrote on fallen leaves the things that bring us down, make us sad, the negatives in our lives. And then we cast them into the fire and banished them from our lives, an act to take away their negative power and put us back in control. We all went away lighter and more positive 💚

Talk about farm fresh field to fork! We are fortunate to have our alternative provision forest school site in an orchard on a farm, so with access to apples we did some scrumping, lit a fire, added a sprinkle of cinnamon. Then boiled the kettle to wash it down with hot chocolate. And then, to add some fun and make use of surplus post Halloween Pumpkins, we had an axe throwing competition! All in a days work!
