Beautiful blue sky this afternoon 🩵 made a lovely back drop for these mature trees on the field boundary.

We spent time yesterday removing brambles and blackthorn in the woods - opening up a new section. This will generate new growth and habitat as well as natural wildflowers. Still a little bit left to do there but once we are done - that will be a whole new view again ♻️

Whilst today’s job mainly consisted of lane maintenance! Potholes successfully filled and a drainage channel cleared again 💪

We have a little announcement…

Many of you will be aware from some of the awful reports of misdoing in the last year or two, that the funeral sector is largely unregulated - it is a pretty scary fact.

Thankfully there are various ‘professional bodies’ out there in the industry; whom those of us wishing to self regulate can join. I firmly believe that establishments who want to do this; stand out from the rest, offering honesty and transparency when it is asked for. It is difficult seek reassurance of a standard of best practice, when a firm is not willing to be part of a bigger picture in some form.

We have been proud members of the Association of Natural Burial Grounds for many years now. This is a link that started way before we even realised that Penlow field was a possible place to create Atlantic Rest Natural Burial. At a guess I think we must have been members for over 15 years - despite having only been providing a final resting place to our residents for the past 12 of those.

For that reason it is an immense honour to be awarded, for the second year in a row - regional winner for the South West People’s Award.

As part of the regulation within the association, we commit to the code of conduct. This involves providing our families the opportunity to share their experience after their loved one ‘moves in’ to Penlow and becomes part of the Atlantic Rest family.

These feedback forms go directly back to the Association of Natural Burial Grounds-ANBG , being scrutinised first of all by the manager Rosie - then by an independent judge. Each feedback form is read and judged not only by region for a winner and runner up, but also nationally for an overall winner.

I do not envy the task of reading through all those forms - I know that the standard of professionalism for families and the care afforded to them by all member sites is incredibly high, it’s a very difficult thing to determine.

We thank all our families that have taken the time to share their experience with us. It is what counts and sets us apart. We will always continue to provide the care for your loved ones that they deserve.

Thank you always 🤍💚❤️🖤💙🧡

P.S. Everyone that chooses natural burial is a winner - looking after our environment is a choice to protect our future generations

Despite the wild weather, we’ve been to Penlow this morning to carry out our usual new year clear up.

This means that we’ve removed all remaining wreaths from graves, including anything else that had crept in like stones and willow items.

These have not been disposed of; incase anyone is still coming to collect them, to reuse for next year. They are all up by the toilet (as shown in the photo).

Thank you to everyone who has collected their wreath already.

I will share now (as I’ll probably have forgotten by next Christmas!) that I saw a post from another natural burial ground yesterday. They had carried out their clear up and found a novel idea that someone had used for their wreath…..a potato used almost as floral foam (commonly known as oasis). Shame there isn’t a photo of the front, but a nice simple idea all the same 🙂

He came, he saw and he conquered - words used to describe the life of our newest resident Frank. Sounds like a life well lived ❤️

Having had a few interactions with Frank - I knew he was a bit of a character to say the least. I hope you enjoy your new home at Penlow and thanks for keeping us all dry during your windy and cold arrival today🌥️ 🌹

Hedge laying (also known as steeping) is a traditional countryside technique; used to manage hedges, keeping them alive and a thriving habitat for wildlife.

We planted the car park hedges in March 2014; so they’ve established themselves fairly well over the last almost 12 years, despite the wild Cornish winds!

Barry is a friend of Penlow with his Dad resting here. He is also an advocate of all things nature with a real passion for hedge laying. He has worked very hard for several days; in pretty miserably cold conditions carrying this ‘Devon style’ job out!

This work will allow the hedge to thicken and grow up again. It might feel a bit harsh at first glance, but I think that managing the environment always feels like this - especially where trees are concerned. In a couple of years, this hedge will look entirely different again.

Hedge laying is even a competitive sport these days. Barry has had a little Robin overlooking his work on several days 🧡

The work is now complete and it’s looking very different in the car park!

The viewing platform has had a glow up too with new rails to replace the old that were no longer doing their job!

If anyone is looking to use Barry’s skills for their hedge - please make contact with me for his details.

It’s also 12 years ago today that we were granted planning permission to create Atlantic Rest - where does the time go ❤️

Penlow Roll Call:

In our usual Christmas fashion, all our residents got a Christmas visit today. A well wish for wherever they may be, with everyone’s name spoken in the order that they arrived to rest. Even Frank who’s yet to ‘move in’ in the new year.

Seats maybe empty at home, but hearts are full with grateful memories wherever you go🤍🤍🤍

This afternoon some of our residents have been caring and sharing 🤗

You may notice that when you visit - your loved one’s grave may look a little different…please don’t be worried by this.

It is no exact science in preparing the ground for a new resident to move in; so sometimes after a while when residents have ‘settled in’, it may be necessary to lower the soil mound a little, and it may be necessary to top someone up.

This is also part in preparation for tree planting in the woodland area. So, if you visit and wonder what’s happened, please don’t panic - hopefully this will explain it all.

We aren’t finished yet so there is more work to be done.

We are just taking care of everyone for you all.
❤️♥️💖💙💗💜💞🖤💚🧡🤎🤍🩷🩶🩵
