Meningitis B (MenB) Vaccine:
Who is eligible?Following the recent MenB outbreak in Kent, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has clarified who is eligible for the vaccine. While the risk to the general public remains low, certain groups are being prioritised for protection.Who is eligible now?You are currently eligible for the MenB vaccine if you have been offered preventative antibiotics (prophylaxis) because of the Kent outbreak.
This includes:Close contacts of confirmed or suspected cases.University of Kent students living at the Canterbury Campus (including those who have since travelled home).Students at other Canterbury universities who live in halls or accommodation where a case has been identified.Sixth Form students (Years 12 & 13) in Kent schools where a case has been confirmed.
Year 11 students in specifically affected schools.Visitors or staff who were at Club Chemistry in Canterbury between 5 March and 15 March 2026.Important Information:The Vaccine: Protection requires 2 doses, given at least 4 weeks apart. It takes about 2 weeks after the second dose for full immunity to develop.Antibiotics: If you are offered antibiotics, take them immediately.
They provide the fastest protection against the bacteria.Wider Public: If you are not in the groups above, your risk remains very low. The bacteria require close, prolonged contact (like kissing or sharing drinks) to spread.
