Did you know that you don’t need to be into sport in order to benefit from a sports massage?

For many of us, prolonged sitting combined with the repetitive nature of many everyday tasks can lead to repetitive strains, overuse injuries and postural problems. All of which can result in pain, reduced range of movement and poor function.

There are a variety of reasons why hip pain can come about and many of those can be easily treated with postural changes, simple stretches and strengthening and of course Massage Therapy.

Massage for hip pain not only helps relax the muscles around the hip joint, but also improves blood circulation, reduces inflammation, and promotes the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers!

So, how does it work?

By releasing areas of tension through kneading, mobilising and stretching techniques, space is created in any misaligned areas, giving the body a natural opportunity to shift into better alignment. Massage also provides natural pain relief as direct massaging increases circulation that replenishes stagnant areas, improving tissue health and releasing natural opioid(painkiller) like hormones. Your body is then able to become more relaxed and moves into rehabilitation mode.

Deeper tissue work and more direct pressure to and around your hips, lower back and legs throughout a treatment session can be common for hip pain all of which can lead to better mobility, alignment and circulation.

Within the Chakra system, the hips are located at the second Chakra (Svadhistana or Sacral) which is the foundation of a healthy ego, sensual and emotional balance that allows us to interact with the world without selling ourselves short or having to pretend to be someone we are not.

When this Chakra is in balance, it helps strengthen resilience and allows us to form harmonious relationships in all areas of our life. But when it is blocked, or out of alignment, it can cause our lives to fall into a state of chaos which can led us to form abusive, controlling or co-dependant relationships, and can even cause fear of abandonment, along with loss of financial and/or creative power.

You can use the following Affirmations to help rebalance and unblock your Sacra Chakra and also incorporate the colour orange into your daily life by wearing orange clothes, jewellery or make up, wearing or using orange crystals or even incorporating orange foods into your diet:

I was chatting with a friend last week, who also happens to be a Pilates teacher. We had a great time and got round to asking each other about any we love Pilates. It was quite spooky to find that we both agreed that our classes aren't 'just' about Pilates, but also about about physical and mental well-being.

I truly believe that when we understand why our bodies behave in a certain way, this allows us to focus on the best ways to overcome issues and increase our strength, balance and health.

In particular, one area that I find helps the most is working on the hips as it greatly improves both flexibility and mobility, and by practicing hip-opening poses regularly, you can vastly improve the range of motion in your hips that makes everyday movements like walking, climbing stairs and getting up from a seated position, so much easier.

An added bonus of increasing flexibility in the hips is that this also leads to better posture and alignment in the spine. What's not to love?
