Studies show that yoga has an effect of neurogenesis (production of nervous system cells) of the brain which is what anti depressants also do. The hippocampus area of the brain shrinks in people with recurrent or untreated depression. Neurogenesis is the process of increasing the size of the hippocampus, exercise and in particular yoga aids this. It is not a replacement for professional medical care but a good complement, always seek medical help in the first instance.
