Do You Use a Sports Massage Therapist?

It’s a question worth asking - especially if you’re active, training regularly, or simply pushing your body through daily demands.

Sports massage isn’t just for elite athletes or post-injury recovery. It’s for anyone who values movement, wants to feel better in their body, and is looking to prevent small issues from becoming big problems.

Whether you’re training for an event, managing stress and tension, or recovering from a tough week at work, sports massage can support your body in ways that go far beyond relaxation. It improves circulation, releases tight muscles, speeds up recovery, and helps you move more freely and efficiently.

💡 Think of it as part of your performance and wellbeing toolkit—not a luxury, but a form of maintenance.

If you’ve never tried it, or only book when something feels “off,” maybe it’s time to shift the mindset from reactive to proactive. Your body works hard for you. Regular care can make all the difference.

So - do you use a sports massage therapist? If not, maybe now’s the time to start.

When to Get a Sports Massage!?

Sports massage can be beneficial at any time, but for optimal results - especially if you're active or experiencing discomfort - timing matters:

💪 Pre-Event (a few hours before activity)
Helps activate muscles, boost circulation, and improve performance readiness.

🦵 Post-Event (within 48 hours after activity)
Supports recovery, reduces muscle fatigue, and helps flush out metabolic waste.

🦶 Maintenance (weekly or biweekly)
Aids in injury prevention, keeps muscle tissues healthy, and promotes consistent recovery.

Start your strength journey 💥

➡ Start strong by understanding your body:

💪 A sports massage therapist can identify postural issues, muscle imbalances, and areas of tension.
💪 This helps tailor your strength plan to reduce injury risk from day one.

➡ Integrate regular sessions into your routine:

💪 Aim for every 2–4 weeks depending on training intensity.
💪 Sports massage improves circulation, reduces muscle soreness (DOMS), and speeds recovery.

➡ Don’t wait for pain to book an appointment:

💪 Sports massage therapists can help with preventative care - keeping tissues mobile and joints healthy.
💪 Think of it as maintenance, like tuning a car before it breaks down.

➡ Post massage:

💪 You often feel more body-aware and connected.
💪 Use this window post-treatment to refine lifting technique or address weaker movement patterns.

➡ Therapists can detect:

💪 Tightness, trigger points, or inflammation before it becomes a full-blown injury.
💪 You can adjust your training accordingly (de-load weeks, alternate exercises, etc.).

➡ Deep tissue or relaxation-focused massage:

💪 Reduces cortisol.
💪 Helps you sleep better - which directly impacts strength gains and recovery.

➡ For best results:

💪 Light massage = pre-lift or same day.
💪 Deep massage = at least 24 - 48 hours before heavy lifting to avoid short-term strength reduction.

😔 Stress is one of the biggest challenges to our overall well-being.

Did you know that sports and remedial massage therapy can play a powerful role in managing stress?

Regular massage sessions help reduce muscle tension, promote better sleep, calm the nervous system, and boost mood by increasing serotonin and dopamine levels. It's more than just physical relief - it's a reset for both body and mind.

I'm currently taking a well-deserved break this week to recharge and step away from the daily routine. If you need to reach out, feel free to drop me a message - just note that my replies might be a little delayed.

Take care of yourselves and have a great week!

Sever’s Disease in Children – How Sports Massage Can Help

Sever’s Disease (also called calcaneal apophysitis) is a common cause of heel pain in growing children, especially those aged 8–14 who are active in sports like football, gymnastics, or running. It’s not actually a disease, but an overuse injury caused by inflammation at the growth plate in the heel.

👣 It happens when the Achilles tendon pulls on the heel’s growth plate, often during growth spurts when bones grow faster than muscles and tendons can keep up.

Common Symptoms:

➡ Heel pain during or after activity

➡ Limping or walking on tiptoe

➡ Tenderness or swelling at the back of the heel

➡ Stiffness first thing in the morning

✅ How Sports Massage Can Help:

While hands-on massage doesn’t treat the growth plate directly, it can play a helpful role in managing symptoms and supporting recovery:

🔹 Relieves tension in tight calves and hamstrings, reducing strain on the Achilles tendon
🔹 Improves circulation to help with healing and reduce inflammation
🔹 Restores mobility and reduces compensation patterns elsewhere in the body
🔹 Supports recovery alongside advice on rest, stretching, and appropriate footwear

Massage is always gentle, age-appropriate, and tailored to the child’s needs — and I’ll always work in collaboration with any medical advice they’ve been given.

📩 If your child is struggling with heel pain or discomfort during sport, feel free to get in touch. I’m happy to chat and see if massage might be a supportive part of their recovery plan.
