The body is designed to move. We spend the first of years of our lives learning to move, learning movement patterns that in time become second nature.
We can all look back to when we were younger and recall how we would cycle to a friends, play for the afternoon and then cycle home. I donโt ever remember aching the next day?
We assume itโs because we were young, with young healthy muscles. To a degree this is true! But we only start to age this way because we stop moving so much.
I often look at sports and hobbies Iโve done over the years, bowls, basketball, cycling, running, kayaking.... this list goes on! But the one thing thatโs constant across all these sports, is that it was fun. I enjoyed doing all of these!
So maybe as we grow older, we lose the ability to simply โplayโ. When was the last time you stood in a field and kicked or threw a ball about? Most of these movements we try to recreate in gyms with fancy equipment.
Maybe we should carry on having fun and playing, being silly in a park or taking time to play games.
Playing with movement is something I quite often advise clients to do, if thereโs a movement that needs improving, find a fun activity that will use that movement! If itโs fun to do, youโre more likely to do it.
Keeping active is so important, we are built to move ๐๐ป
