At A-life we are all about engaging children in the learning where they get hands-on for the teaching to really stick. Our mental health workshops are based on the evidence-led framework the 5 Ways to Wellbeing (Give, Connect, Be Active, Keep Learning, Be Mindful) because they’re simple, practical and used to improve mental health and emotional wellbeing in both children and adults.

When children build these into their day, it helps balance the brain — improving mood, focus, confidence and overall wellbeing. It’s a bit like giving the brain the right vitamins to keep balanced.

The big difference with A-life is we don’t just talk about mental health… we make it active. Children move, interact, work together and experience each part of the 5 Ways.

We see it every time — better engagement, better behaviour, and children who clearly understand what helps them feel good and ready to learn.

It’s especially powerful for those who struggle sitting still or learning in more traditional ways.

What schools say

If you’re coming to the West Sussex PE Conference on Friday, come and say hi to us in the marketplace.

With millions of pounds of PE & Sport Premium going unspent last year, many schools are looking for enrichment that is educational, engaging, supports wellbeing and is easy for teachers to bring into the school day.

That’s what A-life has been doing for over 22 years.
We visit primary schools delivering interactive, hands-on workshops that help children understand the importance of living a healthy lifestyle — both physically and mentally. The key is making learning hands-on and engaging for every learning style and ability. When children are involved, moving and trying things for themselves, they engage far more as well as learn for life.

Over the years we’ve worked with over 1.5 million children in thousands of schools, and teachers often tell us it’s one of the most memorable days of the year for their pupils.

Schools can pick and mix sessions depending on what they want to focus on:
• Healthy Living Workshops (Nursery–Year 6)
https://a-life.co.uk/healthy-living-workshops/

• Mental Health & Wellbeing Workshops (Year 1–6)
https://a-life.co.uk/mental-health-workshops/

• Fun Fitness & Circuit Sessions (Nursery–Year 6)
https://a-life.co.uk/fitness-sessions/

• Drug & Alcohol Awareness Workshops (Year 5–8)
https://a-life.co.uk/drugs-awareness-workshops/

We’ve also developed our award winning platform A-life Online — an ad-free bank of short educational movement breaks and wellbeing videos that teachers can use every day to help children reset, refocus and learn through movement.

Schools often use PE & Sport Premium, PTA, Science or PSHE budgets to fund a visit.

SEND provision in schools is changing - how will teachers cope?

From the direction of the latest SEND reform discussions it seems:

More pupils with additional needs will be supported within mainstream classrooms, with greater focus on early intervention and strong universal provision, rather than everything escalating to EHCPs.

The practical question schools are asking is:

How will teachers actually manage that day to day in the classroom?

“It’s hard already!” One thing we hear constantly when visiting schools is the rising challenges that teachers are facing every day. I have seen personally the dramatic change over 22 years of visiting schools talking to approx 40,000 teachers.

The change:

1) In children - The most obvious change I have seen is in children’s concentration, focus and teamwork skills, which have dropped drastically almost universally.

2) In the role of teacher - Teachers have had so much extra added to their role and feel the pressure of having to fit in more and more to their already crammed timetables. (The ironic thing is, most children are actually learning and retaining less and less, not because of the teachers but because of the pace to fit everything in).

3) In the classroom environment - I have had classes in our workshops with 3-4 children with very demanding additional needs (behaviour, language, learning needs, physical) and with no support staff. The teachers are understandably incredibly stretched trying to manage their needs as well as approximately 25/30 other children.

4) In budgets and time contraints - There are lots of incredible support options and resources to help, however, budgets are tighter than ever.

This is where daily educational movement breaks are proving vital in every classroom. YouTube is not the answer but something that is build for schools getting the right age and educational angle.

Great to spend today (and most of this week) visiting uKids Holiday Clubs to deliver circuit sessions.

The clubs were brilliantly organised, the staff were welcoming and switched on from the moment we arrived, and the timetable was full of energy. From inflatables to a wide range of activities, it was clear the children were having a fantastic time.

It’s always encouraging to see holiday provision done properly — active, structured, safe and genuinely fun. A lot of thought clearly goes into creating a great experience for the children.

It’s Children’s Mental Health Week and we’re fully booked in schools all week.

Which is great — but it’s also worth saying:
mental health isn’t a one-week focus.

Our Mental Health & Wellbeing Workshops can run at any point in the year, because the need doesn’t disappear once the posters come down and the week moves on.

In the sessions, we explore the 5 Ways to Wellbeing in a way children genuinely understand and enjoy:

Give – kindness, teamwork and helping others
Connecting – building friendships, talking, working together
Be Active – using movement to support mood, focus and confidence
Learning – trying new things and building self-belief
Mindful– noticing feelings, the body and what’s going on around them

Everything is hands-on, practical and pitched so all children can take part, including SEND and mixed-ability groups.

Alongside our Mental Health & Wellbeing workshops, we also deliver:
🍎Healthy Living workshops
🏃‍♂️Fitness sessions
💊Alcohol & Drug Awareness workshops for Years 5 and 6

If you’re looking for something that children actually engage with — not just sit through — you can find more at a-life.co.uk

We also have A-life Online for schools to access movement and healthy lifestyles everyday

Busy week in schools

We’ve been in and out of halls all week, working with around 1,500 children and using practical, play-based activities to explore healthy living. Lots of movement, lots of energy, and some brilliant conversations along the way.

It reinforces what we see time and time again — when children are hands-on, moving and involved, learning is so much better. They don’t just hear it… they experience it. And that’s when it really sticks.

This kind of hands-on approach works particularly well in schools because it brings topics to life in a way that fits naturally alongside the curriculum. Many schools use their PE & Sport Premium, but the learning also links strongly with PSHE, Science and wider life skills.

For anyone who’s not familiar with what we do, our workshops include:

Healthy Living Workshops (Nursery–Y6)

Mental Health & Wellbeing Workshops (Y1–Y6)

Fitness / Circuit Training Sessions (Nursery–Y6)

Alcohol & Drug Awareness (Y5–Y6)

All interactive, practical and designed to work for whole classes, including SEND and mixed-ability groups.

Great to see campaigns like getting more attention, because this is exactly what we’ve been doing at A-life in primary schools for over 21 years.

We’ve been out in schools all week delivering hands-on, active health & wellbeing workshops – using movement, practical activities and real-life learning to engage children of all abilities and bring the curriculum to life.

Some lovely feedback from schools this week:
“Children really enjoyed the session and found it informative. Very engaging activities all pitched well for their age.” – The Avenue Infant School

“A good mix of activities, which they could be independent in. Well organised and explained. All children were engaged in the activities. Teachers too! Nice recap at the end.” – Eversley Primary School

“Excellent instructor. Instructions were clear, concise and child-friendly… The instructor circulated around the different stations, ensuring the children were okay and had any assistance they needed. The children really enjoyed their experience.” – Year 4 Teacher, Riverside Primary

When learning is active and hands-on, children engage more, remember more and enjoy school more. We see it every day.

Just arrived at

After spending 22 years working face to face with millions of children in schools, one thing really stands out: classrooms feel very different now. Teachers are carrying a lot, and many children are coming in tired, overwhelmed, and not moving enough — and you can see the knock-on effect on learning, behaviour and wellbeing.

The simple stuff still matters most. Sleep. Movement. Healthy habits. When those foundations are in place, days in school tend to run better for everyone.

At Bett, I’m keen to connect with people and companies who genuinely want to improve life for teachers and children by putting health and wellbeing higher up the priority list — not as an add-on. Learning needs to be more active, more engaging, and more human.

We’ve built something that could sit naturally in every classroom and every home, and I’m always happy to chat openly about how we make that work in the real world.

If you’re there, come and say hello. I would love to chat.
