Is this Burnley’s most generous financial adviser?
As we walked into the bar area of Crow Wood Hotel & Spa Resort to meet one of our newest Burnley Bondholders for a coffee, there’s a wedding being set up and it was a beautiful day for it.
“How lucky are we to have this venue in Burnley, I usually meet most of my clients here because it’s just such a great space,” Tass Hussain, who is a self-employed financial adviser within the Quilter Financial Planning Network, told Burnley.co.uk.
Only a few minutes into the conversation, it is clear Tass isn’t your usual financial adviser. He provides free pension clinics for older people who struggle in an online world and simply need someone trustworthy and friendly to help them with the paperwork.
“Imagine how frustrating and scary it must be, especially when you don’t have family nearby or around to help, and it can be easy for people to be taken advantage of. There’s a lot of misinformation around pensions across all ages, so I also go into businesses, especially smaller ones, to hold myth-busting sessions so people can get the most out of their investments,” Tass said.
Before we come back to Tass’s more modern approach to investing for the future, which may surprise you, we need to talk about Tass’s other philanthropic endeavours. Tass, along with others as part of Khatib Aid Global Relief, travels to refugee camps three times a year to deliver aid parcels.
“It’s a personal reminder that life isn’t tough as we think it is. As a team of eight, we’ve raised £3 million over three years. I have two young children and it’s when I see the children with nothing that I get really emotional,” Tass explained.
One of his fellow aid workers is Burnley resident and artist Foysol Alkaatib, who we have featured before for his charity projects such as running barefoot in the snow, as well as creating bespoke pieces for people like [boxer] Amir Khan and [footballers] Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané.
Home is where the heart is
Tass intends to take his children to the camps when they’re old enough to handle the long travel and days and to fully comprehend the situation. But as well as providing aid abroad, Tass is proud to give back to his town – “I was born and bred in Burnley and that’s really important to me”.
Aside from assisting elderly people and providing free support to businesses, he also sits on the board of his local school, Barden Primary School.
Tass is open about the fact that his recent jump to self employment has been daunting, but his clients – the majority of whom followed him – believe him to be a breath of fresh air.
“Firstly, I try to do as many face-to-face meetings as possible, even if it means long periods of travel. When it comes to financial advice, it’s very personal, and people aren’t as open with you when they’re on the phone or a Teams call. I find especially with those who are older or have suffered a personal tragedy, it’s much more engaging and respectful for me to meet them in person. Some people have told me they are socially isolated and often I’m the first face-to-face conversation they’d had in weeks, which is sad to hear."
