Charter House Resource Centre & Sensory Room Charter House Resource Centre and Sensory Room is a care provider based in Burnley. Our main values are to learn, socialise and have fun!

We specialise in providing Day Care support and Home Care support to adults with disabilities, learning difficulties, the elderly and those with dementia. Charter House Resource Centre CIC has been established to benefit people who have special needs or a disability. Charter House is an Activity Centre for people who have a physical disability or a learning disability. We have a separate sensory room within the same building which we hire out on an hourly basis. Our building has a wheelchair accessibility ramp to the side of the building; there are two separate entrances, one for the activity centre, and one for the sensory room, all of the doors in the centre are wide enough to accept people in wheelchairs. In the toilet area we have two toilets; one of these is fitted with a track hoist and has a drop down changing facility. In our Activity Centre we have;

- Card Making

- Collage, decoupage
- Painting
- Working with clay (pottery)

In our Sensory Room we have;
The latest technology enabling the customer to be in control, also there is;
- Heated water bed
- L.E.D touch panels
- Fibre optics
- Projectors
- Bubble Tube
- UV lighting
and lots lots more! Charter House is managed by Jason and Carolyn Smith, a married couple who have worked for over 20 years with people who have disabilities. Carolyn has managed a large and successful day centre in Nelson for the last 4 years. Jason has worked with people who have a wide range of learning disabilities - both for the NHS, and more recently a large private company for over 10 years. They both feel that they have the knowledge and experience to provide a good level or service.

Charter House Resource Centre CIC is thrilled to be partnered with Lancashire Respite Retreats , a new, local organisation offering accessible holiday homes!

Lancashire Respite Retreats proudly launched their first property in December 2025: Loveclough Bungalow, a beautiful open‑plan, two‑bedroom holiday home nestled in the charming Rossendale Valley.

The property is fitted with a range of moving and handling equipment to meet varying mobility needs, including:

👉Ceiling track hoists
👉A shower chair
👉A mobile care chair
👉A profile bed
👉Spacious, accessible layout throughout

As part of our partnership, guests staying with Lancashire Respite Retreats will receive priority access to the Sensory Room and Hydrotherapy Pool at Charter House Resource Centre (subject to availability). ✨

For individuals who require additional support, CQC‑registered care can also be arranged through our team, ensuring peace of mind and enabling families and individuals to enjoy their stay with confidence.💚

Our Story

For over 12 months we have been working closely with Lancashire county council to secure the use of Brunshaw Youth Club, through Lancashire county councils asset transfer service, this allows Charter House to take ownership of a building, to provide and extend our services for at least the next 125 years.

As stated on Lancashire County council’s website,

“On 7 December, the cabinet agreed in principle the asset transfer of Brunshaw Young People's Centre in Burnley. The group is proposing to move its current service, Charter House Activity Centre, into the young people's centre to continue providing a range of services”. http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/council/get-involved/consultations/changes-to-where-we-provide-services/taking-ownership-of-a-council-building-or-the-running-of-a-service.aspx
